Studies suggest that people who walk two miles daily reduce their risk of cancer-related death by about two-thirds. Data specific for prostate cancer are mixed, but seem to show a much lower risk of prostate cancer in men who get regular vigorous exercise.
There are about a dozen other good reasons to get daily exercise, too, including lower risks of heart disease, depression, diabetes, osteoporosis, falls and broken bones, stroke, high blood pressure and more. Do it!
Weight loss also reduces risk Keeping your calorie count down and getting your body weight into the lean range continue to be some of the strongest factors in disease prevention. With every forkful, ask yourself: Do I need this food? Exercise daily; eat out rarely; bring your lunch to work; and make vegetables, fruits, beans and whole grains the bulk of your diet. The benefits will go well beyond just reducing your prostate cancer risk. These steps also will usually lead to reducing your fat intake overall, or altering the types of fat in your diet to “healthier” fats. Either way, you’re more likely to achieve and maintain good health.
