Arthritis Therapy

The term “arthritis” encompasses more than 120 different diseases and conditions. The most common are osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Common arthritis symptoms include pain, aching, stiffness and swelling in or around the joints. Some forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, can affect multiple organs and cause widespread symptoms.

Providence Rehabilitation Services offers a variety of therapy options to help people with arthritis maintain function in daily activities. Our occupational and physical therapists evaluate movement, function and instruct patients in how to restore loss of motion and strength.

The role of the occupational therapist

  • Assess the need for adaptive aids, orthotics and splinting of the upper extremity
  • Teach strategies for joint protection, energy conservation and how to manage pain symptoms through pacing and home modalities

The role of the physical therapist

  • Assess how a person walks and recommend for a proper assistive devices, such as a cane or walker, if indicated
  • Recommend lower extremity orthotics or braces to support joints, if indicated
  • Teach patients how to conserve energy, protect their joint and manage stress
  • Develop conditioning programs to improve cardiovascular fitness and weight management, including participation in aquatic exercise

It is the goal of Providence occupational and physical therapists to help people overcome limitations caused by arthritis so that they can perform routine activities, maintain independence and prevent future joint damage.
