Providence Rehabilitation Services offers biofeedback as a technique to help people improve their health. By monitoring subtle signals from their own bodies, patients can learn to make positive changes to enhance stress management and diminish muscle tension and pain. Biofeedback has been used with success in the treatment of: Migraine and tension headaches Back and neck pain Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) Oral pharyngeal dysphagia Muscle imbalances Fibromyalgia Athsma Insomnia High blood pressure Attention deficit disorder Incontinence Chronic pelvic pain Irritable bowel syndrome Raynaud’s disease Constipation Esophageal dysfunction
A person’s responses to pain, anxiety, tension and sleeplessness are accompanied by signals from the body that can be measured with a biofeedback monitor. During a biofeedback session, a patient is connected to a biofeedback monitor, which simultaneously measures the body’s skin temperature, electrical conductivity of the skin (galvanic skin response), muscle tension, heart rate and brain-wave activity. Assisted by a biofeedback monitor, our trained therapists instruct patients how to use relaxation, meditation and visualization to achieve desired results. With practice patients can significantly reduce the negative effects of pain, increase the ability to cope with pain and decrease the physiological effects of stress. Biofeedback is offered from St. Vincent Rehabilitation Services. Call 503-216-2610 for more information or an appointment.
