Chronic Pain Therapy

 

Chronic pain is pain involving muscles and joints that persists beyond the typical healing time of three to six months.  Chronic pain may result in restricted activity, fear of movement, and depression or frustration. In extremes, chronic pain can become debilitating.

Providence Rehabilitation Services offers a variety of therapy options to control the effects of chronic pain. Our physical and occupational therapists provide three main functions in the treatment of chronic pain:

  • Reduce the sensation of pain by minimizing the tension reaction to pain
  • Correct biomechanical sources of pain
  • Develop manageable activity levels, and improve strength and condition

This location offers all of the treatments described below except aquatics. Whether a patient receives physical or occupational therapy depends on the nature of the referral and the recommendations made by the team therapist(s) in the course of therapy.

Chronic pain treatment descriptions:

Biofeedback/ Relaxation Training: Enhanced control of physical response to stress and pain through the use of computerized biofeedback.  Includes restful sleep.

Aquatics:  Gentle exercise in warm water strengthens the body with less pain.

Yoga:  Poses involve the entire body to increase mobility and strength, enhance awareness of alignment and function, and teach breathing, posture and relaxation.

Manual therapy:  A wide range of manual techniques restores musculoskeletal joint function and soft tissue mobility.  Home exercises are included.

Feldenkrais®:  A movement science, developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, improves physical motion efficiency with minimal effort.

Lifestyle management: Instruction in managing stress and pain through relaxation and self-calming, life balance, communication, affirmation and other skills.
