Advocacy and Public Policy

As a fundamental part of our Catholic health care ministry, Providence Health & Services is dedicated to advocacy on behalf of the poor and vulnerable in our communities. Through the efforts of system staff and physicians, volunteers and collaborative partners, we are an active voice in helping to shape health care policy - and public policy in general - to reflect the ideals of universal access to health care, social justice and compassion for all members of our society.

Advocacy Principles

We use the following principles that define what we consider to be the ideal health care system as a guide in developing our system position on various  federal and state public policy proposals:

1. Access - A health care system that ensures access to a defined set of basic health care services for all people.

2. People Focus - A health care system that promotes a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of individuals, as well as the social and cultural needs of communities.

3. Quality - A health care system that anticipates and coordinates care across boundaries of time, place, type and organization to maximize quality and health outcomes.

4. Vitality - A health care system that is financially viable and offers a positive environment for patients, physicians and staff.
