The Archives holds collections of records, historical information and visual resources relating to institutions in the western U.S. that the Sisters of Providence have founded or sponsored. They focus on health care, education, social services, and housing. Records of corporate entities that managed these institutions, such as the former Providence Services (Eastern Washington and Montana) and Providence Health System (Pacific Coast states)—predecessors of Providence Health & Services—can also be found in the repository.
Each institutional collection, also called record group, is further divided into record series. Examples of record series are chronicles, correspondence, minutes, reports, school transcripts, early patient records, financial records, oral histories, newsletters, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Photograph and artifact collections further enhance documentation of these institutions through visual media and material objects.
