Educational Partnerships

Providence Health International supports a number of initiatives to provide educational opportunities for health professionals from economically developing countries. Through these educational partnerships we seek to increase the capacity to serve the people in their respective communities.

In 1996, the residency program for Internal Medicine at Providence Portland Medical Center, in conjunction with a program sponsored by the University of Indiana, began a partnership with Moi Medical Center in Eldoret, Kenya. On an annual basis, a faculty person and medical resident from Portland travel to Eldoret for a one-month rotation. In addition, two medical students from Moi Medical Center come to Portland on an annual basis to observe and learn about medical care in this country. A similar program is in place in conjunction with the Internal Medicine Residency at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, also based in Portland, Oregon. Providence St. Vincent has worked in partnership with a couple of different hospitals located in Uganda (Kampala and Mbarrara). (link to a recent evaluation from one of the residents)

Most recently, an educational exchange has developed between Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza, Tanzania and Providence St. Vincent in Portland. This partnership has focused on educational efforts in the area of Critical Care. In 2006, two nurses from Bugando Medical Center spent three months at Providence St. Vincent learning from their U.S. colleagues.
