Support of Providence employees as international volunteers is an extension of our overall commitment to serve the poor. Providence Health & Services supports volunteers, not only to make a difference in settings of great socio-economic need, but also because such experiences can make a difference for those who volunteer, i.e., an experience that is mutually transforming.
Thirty Providence employees participated as volunteers in international programs in 2005, serving in 15 countries. Length of volunteer service ranged from seven days to four months; most volunteers went for 7- 10 days. Approximately $25,000 in support was provided to these volunteers through combined grants from Providence Health International and local Providence foundations. Countries served included Bhutan, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Liberia, Mexico, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Peru, Poland, Russia, Uganda, and Zambia.
During the first six months of 2006, 31 volunteers completed medical mission trips with the assistance of PHI; 11 of them served in Guatemala, nine in Haiti, two each went to Ecuador, Mexico and Tanzania, and one each to Belize, China, India, Rwanda, and Ukraine.
