Providence Alaska Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services, a
not-for-profit network of hospitals, care centers, physicians, clinics, health
plans and affiliated services. Providence Health & Services extends across the
five-state area of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and Montana.
Providence Alaska Medical Center is the largest hospital in Alaska. Located in
Anchorage, it offers full-service, comprehensive care to all Alaskans – a role
unmatched by any other medical facility in the state.
About the Area
Anchorage is surrounded by mountains and water in scenic South Central Alaska. The
Chugach Mountain Range embraces the city to the east and south, while to the west and
north is Cook Inlet, named after the explorer Captain James Cook, who sailed into the
area in 1778. With a population of approximately 280,000, Anchorage is a perfect place
to enjoy urban life while surrounded by spectacular wilderness. Residents and visitors
enjoy easy access to the great outdoors, from fishing for salmon in the heart of downtown
or stepping onto a glacier a few miles down the road, to hiking or skiing in the nearby
mountains or strolling along Anchorage’s many miles of scenic trails.
Programs and Services
Providence Alaska Medical Center continues the tradition of the Sisters of Providence –
who arrived in Alaska more than 100 years ago – by providing health services, facilities,
equipment and care that benefit all Alaskans. As the largest medical center in the state,
we have the technology, expertise and resources to treat everything from broken bones to
complicated births. Providence Alaska Medical Center is also the most advanced medical
center in the state, making it possible for Alaskans to stay in state for complicated
treatments such as heart procedures and inpatient oncology care. Our goal is to keep
Alaskans close to their homes and families while they heal.
Providence Heart & Vascular Center
Located within the medical center, Providence Heart & Vascular Center has six labs
with advanced technologies including two state-of-the-art electrophysiology labs and
an advanced interventional radiology lab. The center provides services such as pre- and
post-cath lab observation, echo, ECG, cardiac rehab and pulmonary rehab. Our labs are
staffed with experienced technicians, nurses and cardiologists who perform complicated
procedures not available elsewhere in Alaska, from infant patent foramen ovale (PFO)
closure to percutaneous aortic aneurysm repair. Patients needing inpatient treatment are
cared for in the center’s Coronary Intervention Unit. Providence Heart & Vascular Center
plays a leading role in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cardiovascular conditions.
Providence Cancer Center
Emphasizing a team approach to cancer care, our center offers a holistic environment for
healing. The 35,000-square-foot center provides access to specialized cancer physicians
and other oncology professionals, the latest in radiation therapy technology unavailable
elsewhere in Alaska, a variety of clinical trials, navigators for one-on-one guidance,
oncology rehabilitation and genetic counseling. An educational resource center is
available to all Alaskans.
Surgery Services
Our state-of-the-art surgery facility includes 17
operating room suites where some 12,700 inpatient and
outpatient surgical procedures are performed each year.
Specialties include open heart and thoracic, neurological,
general, gynecologic, genitourinary, orthopedic, dental,
plastics, pediatric, urology, orthopedics, and eye, ear,
nose and throat. We have been using robotic-assisted
surgery since 2005 and offer the most advanced surgical
robot in the state.
Adult Critical Care
Our full-service, high-acuity critical care unit consists of
28 beds for intensive care, including medical-surgical,
cardiac, cardiovascular surgery, trauma and neurological
patients. The unit is staffed by an experienced team of
ICU nurses, critical care pharmacists, and respiratory
therapists and is served by an intensivist group. Among
the many procedures performed on the unit are sustained
low-efficiency daily dialysis, intra-aortic balloon pump
therapy, ventricular assist device management, and
intracranial pressure monitoring. An additional layer
of support is offered through an eICU that is staffed
with nurses 24 hours a day and with eICU physicians
overnight from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., seven days a week.
The Children’s Hospital at Providence
With the only children’s hospital in the state, we cater
to the special needs of young patients. Our medical
specialists are able to care for children with all levels of
illness and medical conditions. Programs and services
include maternity, pediatrics, pediatric intensive
care unit, pediatric subspecialty clinic, pediatric
neurodevelopment clinic, pediatric hematology and
oncology center, pediatric infusion center, specialized
child abuse evaluations and treatment, and the state’s
only Level III neonatal intensive care unit.
Behavioral health
We provide the only psychiatric emergency department
in Alaska along with a full range of inpatient and
outpatient adult and adolescent behavior health services.
We also offer the only voluntary adult behavioral
inpatient health unit in Anchorage.
