out why our Kodiak medical staff rated us so highly! You will discover that
we provide exceptional technology and a vast array of services not often
seen in a critical access facility. Combine this with our compelling Mission
of compassionate service, and you will find that Providence Kodiak Island
Medical Center is a truly fulfilling place to practice medicine.”
– Don Rush, CEO, Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center
About the Area
Kodiak Island is famous for huge Kodiak brown bears, world-class sport fishing, one of
the largest commercial fishing ports in the nation – and the magnificent green that the
island turns during the summer, which is why Kodiak is affectionately called Alaska’s
Emerald Isle.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy a wide variety of activities year-round. Within a 10-minute
drive from the hospital, you can be anywhere in the city; down on the beach watching
sea lions, fishing for salmon or watching for whales; or well on your way to the top of
Pillar Mountain, which overlooks the port and city. Kodiak also offers numerous cultural
presentations, sporting events and performing arts, thanks to a diverse, active population.
With a population of 14,000, the Kodiak Island Borough includes the city of Kodiak, seven
remote villages, the U.S. Coast Guard Base, and several remote camps and lodges. Kodiak
is located on the northeast end of the island and is a one-hour jet flight from Anchorage.
Ferry service to the mainland road system involves a 10- to 12-hour open ocean voyage.
Programs and Services
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center is the island’s only hospital. It serves the
Borough of Kodiak, including the remote villages, and also serves as a conduit of care
for mariners and for communities farther down the Aleutian Islands. Kodiak has a
collaborative medical system, with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Kodiak Area Native
Association and the private sector working cooperatively to meet the needs of all our
citizens. Although Kodiak Island is remote, Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center
provides greater capabilities in physician expertise and equipment than would be
expected at a hospital of similar size. These capabilities include specialty support services
and emergency care, including an air ambulance service and emergency response from
the U.S. Coast Guard.
Inpatient and Outpatient Services
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center
offers a range of inpatient and outpatient
services including emergency, surgery,

64-slice CT scanner; and a Hologic Selenia
digital mammography machine. The imaging
department also has a portable x-ray machine
and two c-arm machines designed for
maximum mobility for use in emergencies,
surgery and small spaces. The medical imaging
staff is ARRT and RDMS registered and is
committed to continuing education in each
specialty. Teleradiology is offered after hours.
