The Kodiak Island Borough owns Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center.
Providence Health & Services provides operational management of the 44-bed
hospital (25-bed acute floor and 19-bed long-term facility), which features
a significant range of inpatient and outpatient services as well as support
services provided through an outpatient specialty clinic.
“One is always struck by the cohesiveness of the people of Kodiak when it
comes to individuals and organizations banding together to do what is best
for the community. A great example is the development and implementation
of the Kodiak Community Health Center. The health center operates in
rented space within Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center and serves our
community’s uninsured and underinsured population. We are proud to serve
as the only comprehensive medical system for both routine and emergent
care for the entire Kodiak Archipelago and several communities on the
Aleutian Island chain.”
– Don Rush, CEO, Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center
About the Area
Kodiak Island is famous for huge Kodiak brown bears, world-class sport fishing, one of
the largest commercial fishing ports in the nation, and the magnificent green that the
island turns during the summer – which is why Kodiak is affectionately called Alaska’s
Emerald Isle.
Residents and visitors alike enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities year-round. Within
a 10-minute drive from the hospital, you can be anywhere in the city, down on the beach
watching sea lions, fishing for salmon, watching for whales or well on your way to the
top of Pillar Mountain, which overlooks the port and city.
With a population of 14,000, the Kodiak Island Borough includes the city of Kodiak, seven
remote villages, the U.S. Coast Guard Base, and several remote camps and lodges. Kodiak
is located on the northeast end of the island and is a one-hour jet flight from Anchorage.
Ferry service to the mainland road system involves a 10- to 12-hour open ocean voyage.
Programs and Services
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center is the island’s only hospital. It serves the Borough
of Kodiak, including the remote villages, and also serves as a conduit of care for mariners
and for communities farther down the Aleutian Islands. Kodiak has a collaborative medical
system, with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Kodiak Area Native Association and the private
sector working cooperatively to meet the needs of all our citizens.
Although Kodiak Island is remote, Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center provides
greater capabilities in physician expertise and equipment than would be expected
at a hospital of similar size. These capabilities include specialty support services and
emergency care, including Providence’s air ambulance service, Lifeguard Alaska, and
emergency response from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Inpatient and Outpatient Services
Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center
