Providence Valdez Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, care centers, health plans, physicians,
clinics, home health services, affiliated services and educational facilities.
Providence Health & Services has a presence in five Western states: Alaska,
California, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
Providence Valdez Medical Center opened in 2005. It is owned by the city
of Valdez and managed on the city’s behalf by Providence Health & Services.
The facility has connections with Alaska’s largest medical center—Providence
Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage—ensuring rapid access to higher levels
of care when appropriate.
About the Area
Valdez is a beautiful destination town on the coast of Prince William Sound—120 miles by air or
305 miles by road from Anchorage. Locals refer to it as the “Switzerland of Alaska,” in part because
of the 325 inches (average) of annual snowfall and the surrounding Chugach Mountains that
contribute to the area’s spectacular scenery. With its close proximity to Prince William Sound—
one of the world’s greatest recreational areas—residents and visitors enjoy access to incredible
outdoor activities including kayaking, rafting, fishing, boating, cross country skiing, snow cat
skiing and snow machining. Valdez is home to more than 3,500 people and is the southern
terminus of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
