Providence Portland Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services in Oregon, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, care centers, health plans, physicians, clinics, home health services, affiliated services and educational facilities. Providence Health & Services has a presence in five Western states: Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

This 483-bed medical center has numerous award-winning programs and services, including one of the best internal medicine residency programs in the nation. In early 2008, Providence Portland dedicated a new cancer center that is unmatched on the West Coast in terms of the breadth of services and technologies available under one roof.


About the Area
Located just off Interstate 84 in east Portland, Providence Portland Medical Center is one of Providence’s four Portland area hospitals. Residents of the area enjoy a thriving arts, restaurant and entertainment scene. The close proximity to the Oregon coast, Columbia River Gorge, forests and mountains provides access to a wide variety of outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, beachcombing, wind-surfing and snow sports.

Programs and Services
Providence Cancer Center
Providence Cancer Center serves more cancer patients than any other health system in Oregon. Services include diagnosis, treatment, prevention, support, education and access to clinical research trials. The center comprises the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute; Gamma Knife Center of Oregon; Integrative Medicine Program, combining conventional and complementary care; Thoracic Oncology Program for expert care of lung and esophageal cancers; and a national-award-winning smoking cessation program. The Franz Cancer Research Center is a pioneer in new treatment methods that could have landmark significance in preventing and curing cancer.

Earle A. Chiles Research Institute
The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute is dedicated to developing new treatments and improving patient care for cancer, cardiovascular disease and infectious diseases. Noted scientists perform biomedical and clinical research at the institute.

Providence Heart and Vascular Institute
Providence Heart and Vascular Institute is an internationally renowned leader in cardiovascular care, research and education. Physicians lead groundbreaking clinical trials and have trained numerous specialists from around the world. Among the institute’s many specialized services are treating advanced heart disease; interventional cardio-vascular research and ongoing clinical trials; the latest electrophysiology interventions and advanced treatment for atrial fibrillation; and advanced vascular and endovascular surgery, including the treatment of aneurysms.

Providence Portland Medical Center consistently beats the national goal of treating heart attack patients within 90 minutes of hospital arrival and is ranked among the fastest in Oregon.

Providence Brain Institute
Providence Brain Institute offers expertise in caring for all neurosurgical and neurological conditions, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, neuropathies, memory disorders, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, spine conditions, brain tumors and aneurysms. Providence Stroke Center has earned JCAHO certification as a Primary Stroke Center. Providence ALS Center is one of only 34 centers in the nation to receive certification from the ALS Association.

Gamma Knife Center of Oregon
The Gamma Knife Center of Oregon offers the gold standard of noninvasive treatment for patients with brain tumors and various neurological disorders. The Gamma Knife’s precisely focused radiation affects abnormal tissue only, sparing healthy brain tissue. The center is a shared community resource open to all physicians trained and credentialed in Gamma Knife procedures.

Providence Women’s Health
Providence Women’s Health encompasses specialized services for incontinence, breast cancer, osteoporosis and maternity care as well as other services for lifelong health. The Providence Women and Children’s Health Research Center supports and conducts research designed to improve the health of women, newborns and children.

Providence Child Center
Providence Child Center offers a range of services, including skilled nursing care around the clock and developmentally appropriate therapeutic programs in the Center for Medically Fragile Children; the Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children, comprising outpatient clinics for children with special needs; the Jean Baton Swindells Resource Center for Families and Children; and a Montessori school. Providence Child Center also offers day care services for children of health system employees.

Providence Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Advanced Wound Care
The center provides therapy for wound healing and other medical treatments. Pressurized oxygen chambers are used to counter effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, infections, poor circulation and scuba diving-related issues. The center provides the only 24-hour hospital-based hyperbaric medicine service in Oregon and southwest Washington.
