Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital in Spokane,
Washington, has been a national leader in keeping pace with changing
health care needs and the rapid development of medical technology. Its
success has contributed to the health of patients as well as to the economic
health of the Inland Northwest region.
Providence Sacred Heart’s story began in 1886, when the Sisters of Providence
first set foot in Spokane. The Sisters established dozens of hospitals, schools,
orphanages and care centers in the West to care for the sick, poor, elderly
and homeless. Providence Sacred Heart continues to serve the needs of the
community by providing an ever-expanding range of services. In 2004, the
medical center completed a $94 million expansion that included a new, stateof-
the-art surgery center, women’s center and neonatal intensive care unit.
Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital is part of
Providence Health & Services, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, clinics,
physicians and affiliated services in Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and
Washington. Providence operates five hospitals in eastern Washington and
22 others in the West.
About the Area
The city of Spokane is home to more than 195,000 residents. In all, there are nearly
500,000 residents in the metropolitan area. Spokane is located in the heart of the Inland
Northwest and serves as a shopping, entertainment and medical hub for an area that
includes eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, northern Idaho, western Montana, and
southern portions of Alberta and British Columbia. The Spokane River runs through the
city, with dramatic falls in west downtown.
Spokane hosted the first environmentally themed World’s Fair, Expo 1974, becoming
the then-smallest city to ever host a World’s Fair. This event transformed Spokane’s
downtown by reinventing the urban core. Many of the structures built for the World’s
Fair are still in use. The United States Pavilion sits next to an IMAX theater, and the
Washington State Pavilion is now the INB Performing Arts Center. The Expo site itself
became the 100-acre Riverfront Park.
Spokane has a well-developed public and private school system and is home to many
higher education institutions, including private universities Gonzaga and Whitworth.
Spokane is also an outdoor-lover’s paradise, with downhill and cross-country skiing,
white-water rafting, camping areas, hiking trails, numerous lakes and the Centennial
Trail all close by.
