Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital

Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington, has been a national leader in keeping pace with changing health needs and the rapid development of medical technology. Its success has contributed to the health of patients as well as to the economic health of the Inland Northwest region.

Sacred Heart’s story began in 1886, when the Sisters of Providence first set foot in Spokane. The Sisters established dozens of hospitals, schools, orphanages and care centers throughout the West to care for the sick, poor, aged and homeless. Sacred Heart continues to serve the needs of the community by providing an ever-expanding range of services. In 2004, the medical center completed a $94 million expansion that included a new state-of-the-art surgery center, women’s center and neonatal intensive care unit.

Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital is part of Providence Health & Services, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, clinics, physicians and affiliated services in Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Providence operates five hospitals in eastern Washington and 20 others throughout the West.

About the Area
The city of Spokane is home to more than 195,000 residents. In all, there are nearly 500,000 residents in the metropolitan area. Spokane is located in the heart of the Inland Northwest and serves as a shopping, entertainment and medical hub for an area that includes eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, northern Idaho, western Montana, and southern portions of Alberta and British Columbia. The Spokane River runs through the city, with a dramatic falls in west downtown.

Spokane hosted the first environmentally themed World’s Fair, “Expo ’74,” becoming the then-smallest city to ever host a World’s Fair. This event transformed Spokane’s downtown by reinventing the urban core. Many of the structures built for the World’s Fair are still in use. The United States Pavilion sits next to an IMAX theater and the Washington State Pavilion is now the INB Performing Arts Center. The Expo site itself became the 100-acre Riverfront Park.

Spokane has a well-developed public and private school system and is home to many higher education institutions, including private universities such as Gonzaga and Whitworth. Spokane is also an outdoor-lover’s paradise with superb downhill and cross country skiing, white-water rafting, mountain and desert camping, numerous lakes and the Centennial Trail all close by.
