and Washington. As part of the Providence family of health care services, St.
Patrick physicians and researchers have the support and resources they need to

About the Area
A growing city located about halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks,
Missoula offers the best of both worlds to those desiring unmatched outdoor scenery and
recreation as well as excellence in medicine and other fields. The Clark Fork River runs
through it, granite peaks surround it, and that famous big sky hangs over it all. Missoula
is also home to the University of Montana, the state’s largest higher education institution,
and St. Patrick’s International Heart Insitute of Montana draws clinicians and researchers
from around the world.
The city itself has a population of about 65,000 people, folks generally oriented toward
healthy living and an appreciation for such rare amenities as fresh mountain air, blue
ribbon trout streams and wildlife sightings about town. World cuisine, shopping and live
theater are available, as well as lectures and contintuing education opportunities at the
university.
Western Montana enjoys a rich cultural heritage as the homeland of several Native
American peoples, including the Salish (Flathead), Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille, and as an
early fur-trading region in the years after the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through.
Today the area thrives on a mixed economy based in tourism, natural resources, ranching,
academia and health care.
Programs and Services
International Heart Institute of Montana
The International Heart Institute of Montana (IHI) is one of the top cardiac programs
in the United States, with numerous national awards. What makes the Institute so
special? The team. IHI brings together the best cardiologists, heart surgeons, nurses, and
researchers and focuses them on the patient. IHI has a rich history of calling the brightest
heart specialists to blend medicine and industry-shaping research. In conjunction with
the University of Montana, Phase I clinical trials and research in valve surgery and stent
technology have earned IHI physicians recognition and patents for thought-leading works.
The reputation of IHI attracts hundreds of surgeons from around the world to the Annual
Valve Symposium.
Level II Trauma
Our trauma center serves the population
of all of Western Montana and Eastern
Idaho — covering an area as big as Great
Britain and as rugged as Alaska. Life Flight
air ambulance services connect the area to
provide the only Level II trauma care in the
region. The hospital employs a highly trained
team of critical care specialists and takes part
in regional, multi-center research, including
a current project studying the prevention and
treatment of horse-related injuries.
Neuroscience and Rehab
Neurosciences and rehabilitation services are
critical to the hospital’s ability to meet the
rigorous head and spinal injury demands of
our high-level trauma designation. Providers
are supported with advanced technologies,
equipment and staff to provide optimum
care to those with neurological conditions.
St. Patrick houses the Montana Spine and
Pain Center, whose staff have expertise in
orthopedics, pain medicine, neuropsychiatry
and physical therapy. These programs are
areas of significant research with a funded
joint venture through the University of
Montana.
Cancer Center of Excellence
We house a comprehensive medical oncology,
hematology and radiation oncology practice
made up of a team of physicians, licensed
therapists and oncology certified nurses. The
eight board certified physicians have over 150
years of combined experience. Patient care
is enhanced with PET/CT imaging services,
clinical research, social work, breast care
coordinator and more.
Hospitalist Program
The Hospitalist Service at St. Patrick provides
24-hour inpatient care. Our hospitalists are
committed to high quality inpatient care and
play an active role in hospital performance
improvement projects. Our respected team
has established agreements with many
community physicians to care for their
patients when they are admitted.
