Providence Health System Receives Energy Star Partner of the Year Award
Providence St. Peter Hospital is Designated as Energy Star Certified Facility

OLYMPIA, Wash.--Providence Health System has received the prestigious Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star Partner of the Year 2004 Award for leadership in energy management.

The award is presented annually and recognizes long-term commitment to managing energy resources by large organizations. Providence joins the elite ranks of previously named recipients, including General Motors Corp., Raytheon Corp., Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson and Westinghouse.

The Providence utilities management effort spans eight years, with facilities from Anchorage to the San Fernando Valley implementing more than 100 energy-saving projects. By focusing on strategies that reduce energy use through high efficiency lighting, heating and cooling systems, the projects have led to a dramatic reduction in energy consumption and a savings of $5 million in energy costs. In addition, efforts by Providence have also helped keep 14 million pounds of carbon dioxide out of the environment.

"This award recognizes the diligent work by facility managers and support of hospital administrators across Providence Health System," said Richard Beam, corporate utility manager for Providence Health System. "As an Energy Star Partner, we will continue our efforts to achieve superior energy efficiency in our organization. This program is good for the environment and good for our bottom line."

Providence Health System was certified as an Energy Star Partner in 1998 and since then has formally tracked energy cost and consumption for 13 of its facilities.

The award will be formally presented March 2, 2004, in Washington, D.C.

Providence St. Peter Hospital also will receive an award from the EPA on March 2 for becoming an Energy Star certified facility. The hospital has improved its power plant operation efficiency 25 percent in four years. The award also signifies that Providence St. Peter Hospital's energy performance exceeds 75 percent of other hospitals’ energy performance nationwide.

Providence St. Peter joins the Seattle VA and Sacred Heart Medical Center as Washington state's three Energy Star certified health care facilities.

Founded in 1887, Providence St. Peter Hospital is a 390-bed not-for-profit hospital serving the five-county South Sound region with comprehensive medical, surgical and behavioral health services.
