Providence Centralia Hospital Wins National Award for Lumbar Laminectomies
CENTRALIA, Wash.--Providence Centralia Hospital’s orthopedic surgical team has received an OR Benchmarks award for being one of the nation’s best performers for lumbar laminectomies.
Lumbar laminectomy is an operation performed on the lower spine to relieve pressure on one or more nerve roots.
Providence Centralia Hospital was benchmarked against hospitals across the country in a study of lumbar laminectomies conducted by OR Benchmarks, a national surgery benchmarking organization. The award was based on a number of criteria, including total procedural cost, supply and labor costs, and time efficiencies for intraoperative care events.
"This is the second national award our orthopedic surgical team has won in the past six months," said Lorie Khorsand, surgical services manager at Providence Centralia Hospital. In December 2001, the hospital received an OR Benchmarks award as a national best performer for total hip replacements.
"These awards are representative of the quality care orthopedic surgery patients at Providence Centralia Hospital can expect to receive," said Khorsand.
Providence Centralia Hospital, a 191-bed facility, tied for the lumbar laminectomy award with Spectrum Health-Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids, Mich., a 519-bed facility. Compared with Spectrum Health-Butterworth, Providence Centralia Hospital’s cost was lower, procedure time was less and turnover times were 23 minutes (compared to 45 minutes), which was the best of any hospital in the study.
Patients benefit from shorter procedure and turnover times because they spend less time under anesthetic and less time waiting for their procedure to begin.
Providence Centralia Hospital, part of the Providence Health System, is a not-for-profit hospital serving Lewis County with comprehensive medical, surgical and educational services.
