FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 16, 2002

Cancer Program Receives Approval

CENTRALIA, Wash--Providence Centralia Hospital’s cancer program has received approval from The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1932, the Approvals Program sets standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to make sure they conform to those standards. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of its performance. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must undergo an onsite review every three years.

Cancer is a complex group of diseases which requires consultation among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists for improved patient care. The partnership of Providence Centralia Hospital and Western Washington Oncology has provided the advantage of a broad spectrum of care and education locally. Due to this partnership there has been an increase in the number reported of cancer cases. There were 263 cases in 1999, 301 in 2000 and 332 new cases either diagnosed and/or treated in 2001 at PCH and/or Western Washington Oncology.

The top five cases seen at both facilities in 2001 were breast cancer (55 new cases), colorectal cancer (42 new cases), lung and prostate cancer (40 new cases each) and bladder cancer (19 new cases).

Providence Centralia Hospital, part of the Providence Health System, is a not-for-profit 191-bed hospital serving Lewis County with comprehensive medical, surgical and educational services.
