National Poison Prevention Week
March 17-23, 2002
Every year, unintentional poisonings from medicines and household chemicals kill about 30 children and prompt more than 1 million calls to the nation's poison control centers. You can help prevent accidental poisonings by following these three important safety tips:
- Use child-resistant packaging because it saves lives.
- Keep medicines and household chemicals locked up out of reach and out of sight of young children because some children can open child-resistant packaging.
- Keep the poison control center number next to your telephone and call immediately if a poisoning occurs.
There's a new toll-free number to call that will connect you to a local poison control center: 1-800-222-1222.
Stop by the Providence St. Peter Hospital outpatient pharmacy (inside the gift shop) for a supply of Mr. Yuk stickers. They can help you "child-proof" your home.
