Partial Hospitalization

Partial hospitalization is an innovative day program for people ages 16 and older challenged by mental health symptoms. Partial hospitalization serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization and is a transitional program after discharge from inpatient services. It costs substantially less than hospitalization, minimizes disruption to home life and supports independence.

What services does partial hospitalization include?

  • A stabilizing and supportive environment to reduce symptoms and return to optimal functioning.
  • Individualized assessment and goal-oriented treatment planning
  • Group therapy and psychoeducation: problem-solving focus, coping skills, social skills, education about symptoms and course
  • After-care group for support and transition after completion of the partial hospitalization program
  • Medication prescription and management when necessary
  • Linkage to resources in the community
  • Active involvement of treatment team and patient with family and community resources
  • Psychiatric consultation

When is the program offered?
The program is offered two days per week, six hours per day, with an average length of stay being 10 program days.

How does the program work?
Our treatment team includes a psychiatrist, a certified psychiatric registered nurse and licensed mental health therapists. Individual therapists, psychiatrists and case managers actively contribute to the treatment team.

How does the program work?
After an initial evaluation, each individual works with the treatment team to plan treatment goals and develop an attendance schedule. The treatment team, individual and family work together, regularly evaluating progress and making changes as needed. The individual is empowered to guide the treatment team and attain specific goals. The treatment team provides specific and positive expectations throughout the program.

The partial hospitalization program can increase insight and management of mental illness, help avoid relapse, manage mental health emergencies and improve daily functioning. An after-care group is available once a week for support in the transition to a less restrictive level of care upon completion of the program.

How do you receive a referral?
Individuals may refer themselves or be referred by case managers, inpatient discharge planners, therapists, crisis services in the emergency center, psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, family/personal physicians and nurse practitioners. We have served individuals from Seattle to Portland. Financial counseling and coordination with insurance companies are offered to each program participant.
