The following is a snapshot of some volunteer opportunities that may be available within St. Peter Hospital. Opportunities are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and not all positions listed are available at all times. During the placement interview, Volunteer Services will try to match your skills and interests with the needs of the hospital.
Clerical and Office Support - Various Departments
Assist staff with routine clerical and office duties in different areas of the hospital. Tasks may include greeting the public, filing, collating large packets, stuffing large mailings, answering phones, copying, faxing, basic data entry.
Gift Shops
Provide customer service in either Providence Corner or Lullabies by assisting with the purchase of items. Duties include stocking items, using (instruction provided) a computerized cash register, taking telephone orders and making change. Both gift shops are run by an all-volunteer staff who raise money for the Gift Grant Fund. Each year departments may submit a grant proposal to fund much needed items. In the challenging economy of 2009, both Gift Shops combined fund awarded $200,000 to 10 departments in need of new technology and equipment. If you enjoy being around people and love an ever-changing atmosphere, you will enjoy raising funds that help the hospital in many ways.
Service Learning Opportunities
We partner with various public and private schools, universities and community agencies to assist individuals in fulfilling service-learning hours for credit requirements. It is our goal to match each volunteer with a worthwhile assignment. Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy schools requiring volunteer experience in a medical setting can meet that application requirement at Providence St. Peter Hospital.
Patient Comfort - Various Departments
Assist clinical staff in a wide variety of routine clerical and organizational duties, as well as, provide support with various non-direct patient care tasks that enhance patient comfort and the overall hospital experience.
Hospitality
Deliver patient mail and flowers, escort or direct families and visitors to appropriate areas, provide basic clerical support such as making up special packets or stuffing envelopes for large mailings.
Admitting/Information Desks in Main, North and South Entrances
Direct families and patients, greet and assist patients and families with admitting, and direct or escort visitors and patients to desired areas.
Sunshine House
Duties may include greeting guests, answering phones, and other basic clerical duties, as well as, taking reservations and assisting guests. A Sunshine House Cookie Baker volunteer bakes cookies for guests (this assignment requires a food handler's permit).
Emergency Center
A very busy department where volunteers assist patients, families and staff by filling blanket warmers, checking on patients in rooms to see if they need anything, checking stock in kitchen areas, folding information to keep registration areas stocked, escorting patients to a room from waiting area, escorting patients to x-ray, making sure enough wheelchairs in waiting area and using pneumatic tube system to send face sheets to nursing floors.
