Kevin Haughton, MD  Kevin Haughton, MD - Program Director
Education:
 Undergraduate - B.A. in Mathematics, University of California at San Diego, 1979. Medical School - University of California at Irvine, 1986. Residency - Mercy Medical Center (Denver).

Philosophy:
Partners with family and patient in health care decisions.
Medical Interests: Young families, obstetrics and colposcopy. I have a special interest in health delivery systems.
Personal Interests: Family, fishing, reflection and conversation with friends.
Lisa Johnson, MD  Lisa A. Johnson, MD - Associate Director for Curriculum
Education:
 Undergraduate - B.S. in Biology, University of Cincinnati, 1973. Medical School - University of Virginia, 1978.  Residency - Providence Family Medical Center (Seattle).

Philosophy:
I feel best when I work with patients to provide cost-effective care as non-invasively as possible; provide education about healthy lifestyles, and have a solid understanding of patient's psychosocial issues.
Medical Interests:
I enjoy adolescent patients, obstetrics and women's health, but seeing the whole family unit in my practice is the most satisfying.
Personal Interests: My time is consumed by two young boys and a spouse. I also enjoy gardening, backpacking, jogging and reading nonfiction. 
  Lowell R. Dightman, MD - FP Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate - Montana State University, 1969. Medical School - University of Minnesota, 1974. Residency - Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center.

Philosophy:
Patient centered. I facilitate patients' care of themselves and educate them about the self-managed model of medical care while being aware of alternatives.
Medical Interests: Procedural expertise in the office, OB, the patient-doctor deal--what works and what doesn't.
Personal Interests: Cooking, kite flying, music and theater, reading (science fiction, philosophy, sociology), family.
  Maggie Miller, MD - Clinical Associate Director
Education:
 Undergraduate: Animal Physiology, U.C. Davis, 1980. Medical School: U.C. Davis, 1984. Internship: U.C. Davis, 1984-85. Residency: Shasta-Cascade Family Practice, Redding, CA, 1985-87. Chief resident: 1986-87. 
Philosophy: Working with patients to take charge of their health.
Medical Interests: Seeing all family members.   especially enjoy obstetrics, women's health and HIV care.
Personal interests: Being a mom. Hiking. Birdwatching. Gardening and camping with family. Music and reading.

Gabrielle O'Sullivan, MD - FP Faculty
Education:
  Undergraduate - English, Georgetown University, 1995. Medical School: University of Washington, 2000; Residency: UCSF affiliated Sutter Family Practice Residency 2000-2003.
Philosophy:  I strive to work in partnership with each patient to promote healthy lifestyle changes.  My goal is to recognize all aspects of the person - physical, emotional and spiritual - and their role in illness and healing. Finally, I enjoy seeing patients as part of larger families and the community and celebrating this diversity.
Medical interests: Women's health and obstetrics, office procedures, cross-cultural medicine.
Personal interests: Travel, gardening, photography, snowboarding, sailing, running and spending time with my nieces and nephews.

  Devin Sawyer, M.D. - FP Faculty
Education:
  Undergraduate - Biological Sciences, U.C. Irvine, 1989. Medical School: St. Louis University School of Medicine, 1995; Residency: Surgery (internship) - Virginia Mason Medical Center 1995-1996; Family Practice - Providence St. Peter Hospital Family Practice Residency, 1996-1999.

Philosophy:
 To provide broad high quality healthcare to those most in need. To be physician, counselor, friend and neighbor to my patients.
Medical interests: Obstetrics, geriatrics, diabetes management, behavioral science and procedural medicine including minor office surgery, flex. sig., and colposcopy.
Personal interests: Parenting, restoring old houses and old cars, antique furniture.
  Gregg VandeKieft, M.D.- FP Faculty

Philosophy:
Relationship - centered care, respect for patients and effective communication as the foundation for shared decision-making.
Medical interests: Hospice/Palliative Care, Medical Ethics, Medical Humanities and Critical Appraisal.
Personal Interests: Family activities, backpacking, downhill skiing, bicycling, cinema and literature.
  Hillary Allen Kissick, M.D. -Adjunct FP Faculty
Education:  Undergraduate - Biology/Environmental Studies, Whitman College, 1991; Graduate School - M.P.H. Environmental and Occupational Health, Saint Louis University, 1995.  Medical School - Saint Louis University, 1997; Residency -Providence St. Peter Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, 2004.
Philosophy: To provide quality, comprehensive care to all my patients within a framework of mutual trust and decision-making.
Medical interests: I am especially interested in women's health issues and obstetrics.  Performing office-based procedures will also be important.
Personal interests: Almost any equestrian activity, but especially dressage. The barn takes up most of my non-medical life.

Mitch Cohen, MD 

Mitch Cohen, M.D. - Adjunct FP Faculty
Education:   Undergraduate - Biology, Whitman College, 1993/Medical Technology, University of Washington, 1996; Medical School:  Loyola University, 2001; Residency: Providence St. Peter Hosptial Family Medicine Residency, 2004.
Philosophy: To practice with the words of Oliver Sacks in mind. "There is only one cardinal rule: one must always listen to the patient."
Medical interests: Adolescent medicine, geriatrics, procedural medicine, sports medicine, alternative/complementary medicine.
Personal interests: Cooking, reading (American history and the history of medicine), outdoor activities, spending time with family. 

Samantha Ritchie, MD  Samantha Ritchie, MD - Adjunct FP Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate - English, Oberlin College, 1979; Medical School - Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1987. Residency - Overlook Family Practice Residency Program, 1990.

Philosophy:
I believe in listening to the patient, developing a trusting relationship, and taking care of the whole patient.
Medical interests: Issues around domestic violence and child sexual assault.
Rebecca Vogelsang, ARNP  Rebecca Bodle-Shingu, ARNP -  Nurse Practitioner Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate: University of Washington, 1986. Graduate: University of Washington, 1996.

Philosophy:
 Promotion of healthy living and risk reduction is key!!!
Medical interests: Adolescent health promotion, exercise, nutrition.
Personal interests: Parenting, aerobic exercise.

DelRene Davis, ARNP -  Nurse Practitioner Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate: Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, 1979. Graduate: University of Washington, 1994.
Philosophy:
 A family-centered, but individualized approach to healthcare. One size doesn't fit all!
Medical interests: Balint group facilitation. Health promotion. Multi-disciplinary healthcare.
Personal interests: Sailing. Hiking. Reading.

Barry Herman, M.D.-  OB/GYN Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate: Chemistry/Pre-Med, Rutgers, 1970. Medical School: SUNY Upstate, 1974. Residency - UCLA, 1978. 

Philosophy:
 I believe that an important part of caring for patients is to provide current information and to help patients to make informed decisions about their health and that education and communication is an important part of the practice of medicine.
Medical interests: General obstetrics and gynecology. Minimally invasive surgery and problem pregnancies.
Personal interests: Family, reading, motorcycles and computers.
Kelvie Johnson, MD  Kelvie Johnson, MD - Pediatrics Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate- Zoology, University of Washington, 1978. Medical School - University of Washington, 1982. Residency - University of Wisconsin, 1985.
Philosophy: I see my role as that of educator and advisor to patients and families to allow them to make the best choices about their health.
Medical Interests: Preventive pediatrics, adolescent medicine.
Personal Interests: Parenting, travel, gardening, cooking, skiing. 

Cheryl Waitkevich, ARNP -  Nurse Practitioner Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate - Evergreen State College, 1999. Graduate: University of Washington/Washington State University, 2004.
Philosophy: Holistic, honest connection with people to help them navigate health systems. To provide information about health and wellness. To integrate beliefs, attitudes, and lifestyle into good physical, mental and emotional balance.
Medical interests: Pediatrics, hospice, diabetes, cultural diversity.
Personal Interests: Bike riding, piano, theater arts, good books, music, energy healing.

Rick Brandt-Kreutz, LCSW -  Behavioral Science Coordinator
Education:
 Undergraduate - Seattle Pacific University, History and Religion - 1983; Graduate - Fuller Theological Seminary, Masters in Theology - 1989; California State University - Fresno, Masters in Social Work, 1991.
Philosophy: Use the best science; be cognizant of my own limitations; we have much more to learn from children; observe the larger system and how I am part of it; never under estimate the power of symptoms to teach; relationships are more important than we know; use of self is my most important tool.
Special Medical Interests: Integration of behavioral science and primary care; pediatric mental health; prevention and intervention from pregnancy through infancy; family-based mental health intervention; cognitive behavioral therapy; early identification and intervention for developmental and behavioral problems in young children; effective parenting; cross-cultural practice; clinical communications skills training; Balint group work; use of video in teaching; resource and care coordination in systems-based practice.
Personal Interests: Most important is my family, my wife, Betsy, and my two adult children, Chris and Chase. I love backpacking and especially fishing in high alpine lakes. I kayak, canoe and love just about anything that better connects me to nature. My wife and I love to travel, go to museums and explore the world.  Perhaps my greatest joy is eating my wife's cooking that is outstanding and international. Finally, I practice my faith as a Christian from an interfaith perspective and with much dialogue.
Mary Zozaya-Monohon, ARNP 

Mary  Zozaya-Monohon, ARNP-  Nurse Practitioner Faculty
Education:
 Undergraduate - Seattle University, 1985. Graduate: University of Washington, 1996.

Philosophy:
I like collaborating with individuals and their families to maximize their health.
Medical interests: Performance improvement and behavior change.
Personal Interests: Parenting, gardening, travel, maintaining Spanish language and Basque traditions.

Third Year Residents

Joonis Abdulkhader,  M.D. - T.D. Medical College
Philosophy of Care: To prevent the occurrence of disease by promoting a lifestyle that fosters physical, mental and spiritual wellness. I believe in forming a partnership with patients and involving them in the management of their health and illness.
Medical Interests: I am passionate about giving quality care in rural and underserved communities. I have a special interest in preventive care, pediatrics and emergency care.
Personal Interests: I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, hiking, cooking, listening to music and playing shuttle badminton.

Douglas Dightman, M.D. - University of Washington
Philosophy of Care: Family, spirituality and health care the pillars of life. My goals are to help patients (each with individual sets of skills, abilities, short comings and strengths) efficiently maximize their health (recognizing that health means something different to every individual). Along the way, I will be privileged to be a part of my patients' lives; enriched by their stories and the infinite things they teach me.
Medical Interests: Rural medicine including obstetrics. Developing methods to ensure evidence based benchmarks are followed for every patient. Community health.
Personal Interests: I enjoy spending time with my Samoyed, Kayu (white fluffy dog similar to a Husky). Occasionally this means hiking, but Kayu also enjoys playing at local beaches, walking around Capital Lake, and even watching an occasional TV show (some of which we will never admit to watching; though I think I caught him doing the rumba yesterday). Our next hobby will be skijoring (cross country skiing with a dog).

Michael Keep, M.D. - St. George's University
Philosophy of Care: I will provide comprehensive family-oriented care to patients in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory fashion, to help them reach their full health potential by promoting wellness, as well as providing counsel in times of illness.
Medical Interests: Preventive medicine and health promotion, minor office surgeries, obstetrics, teaching.
Personal Interests: Traveling, live music, kayaking, cooking, home improvement projects, theatre.

Paul Knouff, M.D. - Saba University
Philosophy of Care: I want to help patients find practical solutions to real problems through education, keeping in mind that "health" happens outside our supervision in the context of the patient's family.
Medical Interests: Innovation in medicine. Evidence-based medicine, procedures, getting medical care to those who need it most.
Personal Interests: Spending time with my wife and kids, fishing, hiking, woodworking, tinkering with motorcycles or cars.

Darla Richardson, D.O. - College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific
Philosophy of Care: The integration and treatment of the person as a whole; including body, mind and spirit.
Medical Interests: Women's health, pediatrics and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
Personal Interests: Hiking, surfing, traveling, dance and spending time with friends and family.

Second Year Residents

Darryl Bates, M.D. - UCLA Medical School
Philosophy of Care: Working with patients and families to help understand illness, prevent disease and take action.
Medical Interests: Urgent care, minor surgery, international medicine, OB and dermatology.
Personal Interests: Road trips, Cuban salsa, dancing, travel, surfing.

Lucinda Grande, M.D. - University of Washington
Philosophy of Care: Each patient has a unique set of health concerns, best managed in a long-term partnership based on clear communication and mutual respect.
Medical Interests: Chronic pain.  Neuropsychiatric and stress-related conditions.
Personal Interests: International travel, outdoor sports, classical music, neuroscience and spending time with my husband, son and basset hound.

Kari Lima, M.D. - Loma Linda University
Philosophy of Care: I value prevention and encourage patients to make positive changes in their physical, emotional, social and spiritual health. I want to help patients understand and take control of their health and health problems. I believe in working together.
Medical Interests: Preventive medicine, women's health, global health.
Personal Interests: Hiking, bassoon reed making, swimming, astronomy, reading, any type of music.

Bethany Sweet, M.D. - Ben Gurion University of The Negev
Philosophy of Care: A true healer transcends all borders, languages and cultural barriers to heal the body, educate the mind and soothe the soul.
Medical Interests: OB/women's health care, rural medicine, international medicine.
Personal Interests: Family (husband and daughter, Willow), painting, traveling, scuba diving, hiking.

 

Jessica Van Fleet-Green, M.D. - University of Washington
Philosophy of Care: To build strong relationships and collaborate with my patients so they can achieve THEIR healthcare goals through preventive measures, healthy lifestyles and the conservative use of costly and invasive procedures.
Medical Interests: Rural and preventive care, adolescent medicine and women's health, including obstetrics, family planning and well-woman care.
Personal Interests: Spending time with my familing, riding my horses, running and working on my home and in my garden.

Leyen Vu, D.O. - Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine
Philosophy of Care: To foster an open relationship with patients based on trust and education.  With a patient-centered approach, I hope to make patients active participants in their own healthcare.  A physician is an extension of the patient.  Our role is to assist the body with its inherent ability to heal itself.
Medical Interests: Sports medicine, preventive medicine, osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT).
Personal Interests: Playing guitar, writing music, organized and outdoor sports, family.

 

 

Angus Watson,  M.D. - Saba University
Philosophy of Care: I feel the following are probably key:
* appreciation for, and respect of, every individual;
* seeing the difference one can make in this role;
* honesty about what one knows and the drive to find out more.
Medical Interests: Presentations of unclear etiology. Prevention in practice.  Innovations in family practice.  Management of psychiatric issues. Skill sets pertinent to rural practice.
Personal Interests: Family. Outdoors. Geography/geology. Games. Sports. Having my views expanded.

First Year Residents

Marina Berndt,  M.D. - Vladivostok State Medical University
Philosophy of Care:  Not having enough power to change pitfalls in the health care system for the whole population of sick people, I will use all my knowledge and passion to provide the best care to one patient at a time.  The team approach is the key in helping patients not only with their medical but also social needs.

Medical Interests: Primary Care is a point of intersection and interaction of a broad variety of medical specialties.  Being a reliable partner in a health care team.  Providing care and being an advocate for uninsured people in our community.
Personal Interests: Exploring the outdoors and local natural beauty.  Traveling to never before seen parts of the world.  Being a good friend to new and life-time friends.  Being an interesting person and good mom to my children.

Samuel Blake,  M.D. - University of Vermont
Philosophy of Care: Respect, honesty and trust.  Knowing one's limits in providing care, but always seeking to learn more.
Medical Interests: Global health, preventive medicine, minor office procedures.
Personal Interests: Spending time with family, being outside, reading, sports, church.

Angelika DeLoa,  M.D. - Chicago Medical School
Philosophy of Care: Create a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental environment where my patients feel comfortable and forthcoming. Create a partnership with my patients, emphasizing their responsibility in their health, while empowering them with tools to achieve their goals. To be very sensitive and aware of the social context of my patients to maximize success and any assistance they may need.
Medical Interests: Education and counseling of patients, caring for generations within a family, integrative medicine, office surgical procedures (I'm very interested in pursuing legislative means to make health, nutrition and physical education a mandatory and essential part of education of children from a very young age. I believe by targeting children we could make an enormous positive impact on their life-long health habits - and involve their parents and older generations as well.)
Personal Interests: Spending time with my husband, outdoor activities, cooking, travel, riding our tandem bike. I hope to learn more about gardening. I hope to learn about complimentary medicine and how I can successfully apply this knowledge/techniques as an adjunct to my practice.

 

Andrew Larsen,  M.D. - University of Washington
Philosophy of Care: Providing excellent, comprehensive medical care to all patients who have entrusted their health to me while developing long-term patient-physician relationships.
Medical Interests: Full spectrum family medicine, but especially chronic disease management and pediatrics.
Personal Interests: Time with family, fishing, hiking, camping, listening to music and attempting to play it, reading.

 

Jessica Lehrfeld,  D.O. - Western University of Health Science
Philosophy of Care: The best medicine educates people about good choices and supports them along every step of the way.
Medical Interests: Preventive medicine, breastfeeding, smoking cessation, nutrition, complementary medicine, osteopathic manipulation therapy.
Personal Interests: Bread making, motorcycles, gardening, making art out of trash.

John Rodakowski,  M.D. - Oregon Health Sciences University
Philosophy of Care: Family medicine is a field that provides an opportunity for training in a wide area of skills. This makes it an ideal specialty for people interested in rural health care. I want to have a practice that provides a full range of primary care in a rural community in the Pacific Northwest. This would include following patients from birth to the end of their life; providing OB care; promoting a health lifestyle; preventive screening for colon cancer, heart disease and other illnesses; and being available at the end of life to offer help and support to patients and their families.
Medical Interests: Rural primary care, OB, endoscopy and public health.
Personal Interests: Camping, hiking, cycling, fishing, hunting, fiddle playing, knitting.
