Cesarean Section

If you had a cesarean section, you will likely need a little longer to regain your strength.  The abdominal incision may be tender to touch and may be a bit red.  You may also have some numbness above the incision.

Your incision may be covered with Steri-strips (little strips of tape that help incisions heal more cosmetically).  It's alright to get the Steri-strips wet in the shower or bath, and you may remove the strips after 10 days if they have not come off by themselves.

It's okay to lift your baby, but don't do any heavy lifting for a while.  Plan not to drive a car for two weeks after you give birth, and don't do any exercises that tense your abdominal muscles for four weeks.  In fact, it's a good idea to postpone strenuous exercise until you discuss it with your doctor at your postpartum visit.

Most of all, listen to your body.  You'll know you're overdoing it your bleeding increases or if your incision, abdomen or back begin to hurt when you're doing an activity.
