Sexuality

You will have an opportunity to discuss family planning with your doctor at your postpartum visit.  Remember: pregnancy can occur before your menstrual periods resume.

Most doctors suggest that you refrain from intercourse until your stitches stop hurting and the birth canal has begun to heal.  This takes at least two to three weeks, but four to six weeks is normal.

During this time, you and your partner can enjoy affectionate touch through hand-holding, massage and sexual play.  When you resume sexual intercourse, you may want to use additional lubrication and go slowly.
