Cancer Treatments

Your cancer care may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery or a combination of treatments. Physicians at the Providence Regional Cancer System work closely with you to develop the best treatment plan based on your individual case and needs. During the treatment-planning process, your doctor has access to many resources, including other cancer specialists, to figure out the most effective course of action.

Chemotherapy and Infusion Services
Chemotherapy (chemo) uses medicine to destroy cancer cells. Most chemotherapy agents are given intravenously (IV) and may include daily, weekly or even monthly treatments. Providence Regional Cancer System has three infusion therapy clinics in Lacey, Centralia and Aberdeen, all of which are located in the Providence Western Washington Oncology physician offices.

At each of our locations, you’ll have access to the latest forms of chemotherapy and other anti-cancer drugs. You may also be eligible for investigational treatments that are part of a clinical trial.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation to destroy the ability of the cancer cells to divide and multiply. It can precisely target specific tumors without damaging surrounding tissue. The Providence Regional Cancer System offers radiation oncology care in Lacey, Aberdeen and now Centralia. Radiation therapy services are part of a new 21,000-square-foot cancer center in Centralia, which opened in July 2009.

Within the Providence Regional Cancer System, radiation therapy technologies include:

  • 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery
  • Brachytherapy
  • Radioactive Seed Implants (RSI)

Cancer Surgery
For many people with cancer, surgery will be a key part of treatment. If you need surgery, your doctor will refer you to a surgeon, most likely in your community. The Providence Regional Cancer System includes many surgeons who can treat people with cancer, including general surgeons, gastroenterologists, gynecologists, thoracic surgeons, urologists and other specialists.
