Orthopaedic Healing Center

Considering Joint Replacement Surgery?
Are you living with knee or hip pain? Many people think joint pain is an inevitable part of aging. But if you have suffered an injury or have joint pain from arthritis that interferes with walking, exercise, recreation or work, having joint replacement surgery can be life-changing. An orthopaedic surgeon will replace your injured or damaged joint with a new synthetic joint, relieving your pain and giving you more mobility.

We Keep You Informed Every Step of the Way
At Providence St. Peter Hospital’s Orthopaedic Healing Center, we share information with you up front on what will happen before, during and after surgery. Before your surgery and throughout your treatment, we focus on wellness, group rehabilitation and the involvement of family or friends. We want to ease your anxiety and make sure you have the best possible recovery.

Education Class Helps You Prepare
A couple of weeks before your surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon’s office will contact you to schedule an education class. In this class, you will join a group of other patients who are scheduled for joint replacement surgery to receive information about what the surgery entails and what to expect during your hospital stay. You will have the opportunity to view equipment, discuss treatments and therapies and meet the Orthopaedic Healing Center team who will be taking care of you during your stay.

Team Approach Speeds Recovery
Our highly skilled team of orthopaedic surgeons, dedicated nurses, pain specialists, therapists and other caregivers will create an individual treatment plan for you and help you through the rehabilitation process. During rehabilitation, you will have the opportunity to interact with other patients who have had total joint replacement surgery. Sharing the rehabilitation process with others in similar situations is motivating and promotes quicker healing.

Coaches Offer Support and Motivation
You will be asked to bring along a family member or friend who will act as your coach throughout your preparation and rehabilitation. Your coach should be available to accompany you to the pre-surgery education class and post-operative therapy sessions, as well as assist you at home as needed throughout your recovery. Having a coach participate in your care can build your confidence, which typically leads to a faster recovery and earlier discharge from the hospital.

Get Back to an Active Lifestyle
Patients who have total hip or total knee replacements typically recover quickly. You can expect to walk the first day after surgery and be discharged from the hospital two to three days after surgery. You and your coach will receive complete instructions on medications, follow-up care and your exercise/therapy program.

Most patients return to driving in 2-4 weeks, dancing in 4-6 weeks and golfing in 6-12 weeks. All of us at the Orthopaedic Healing Center are dedicated to help you return home and get back to an active lifestyle.
