TIA Clinic

What is a TIA?
TIA is short for transient ischemic attack. It is a mini-stroke that acts like a full stroke, but symptoms usually clear within one hour. Having a TIA is a warning sign that you may experience a stroke.

What are the warning signs of a TIA?
The symptoms of a TIA are the same as the symptoms for stroke, except they generally last less than one hour. If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek emergency care immediately, even if the symptoms disappear.

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

I was seen in your Emergency Center for a TIA. What do I do next?
A stroke nurse from Providence St. Peter Hospital will contact you within 24 hours to schedule an appointment with the neurologist at the TIA Clinic.

What will happen at the appointment?
The neurologist and stroke nurse will review your lab report, stroke symptoms and risk factors, and determine what other tests may need to be performed (e.g., MRI, EKG).
