Outpatient Surgery

Advances in medical technology and anesthesiology mean that many procedures that once required a hospital stay can now be done safely and effectively on an outpatient basis. Outpatient surgery generally is planned in advance and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.

For patients, the benefits of outpatient surgery are less pain, less expense, convenieSurgical Nursesnt scheduling, avoiding a visit to the traditional hospital setting, a shorter time away from home and quicker healing.

At Providence St. Peter Hospital, we take pride in serving as the region's premier center for outpatient surgery. Our talented surgeons and staff have been nationally recognized for excellence in this field, earning a number of awards over the past several years, including:

  • "100 Top Hospitals" national award for top performance in overall orthopedics, hip replacement and fracture repair (HCIA, 1999)
  • "Best" in overall performance for ambulatory (outpatient) facility; lowest cost, knee arthroscopy; and operating room utilization (OR Benchmarks, 1999)
  • Lowest-cost provider for cataract surgery (OR Benchmarks, 1997)

Specialized Expertise
Our medical staff members' extraordinary commitment to excellence has been a driving force behind the awards and national recognition we've attained in recent years. Nearly 100 surgeons work in our outpatient settings, covering a wide range of specialties

Our physicians are uniquely qualified, each having met our stringent requirement of attaining board certification in their specialty before practicing here. Along with our physicians, the Outpatient Surgery team is composed of registered nurses (including resource nurses trained extensively in surgical specialties) and an array of skilled operating room technicians and support personnel.

State-of-the-Art Technology
Providence St. Peter Hospital purchases and maintains the latest equipment for
our surgeons, and we constantly update our technology. Some of the cutting-edge techniques our surgeons use are:

  • Laser technology (allowing a surgeon to quickly perform minimally invasive procedures without traditional surgery's large incisions)
  • Endoscopy (examination inside the body with an endoscope: a tube-shaped instrument connected with lenses and light)
  • Laparoscopy (examination and repair inside the body with a special endoscope)
  • Arthroscopy (viewing and repair of muscles, bones or joints with a tube through a very small incision)
