Volunteer Placement and Training
If you would like become a volunteer, please contact Volunteer Services for an information packet. After you have completed the information, call the Volunteer Services office at 360/330-8578 to schedule an interview. All potential volunteers are interviewed. When you are accepted as a volunteer, you will receive a general orientation. New volunteers and current Volunteer Services staff work together to match people and skills to hospital opportunities. In addition, there may be specialized training required in your area of service in the hospital.
Patients and staff come to rely on volunteer assistance, so it is important that you decide how much time you would like to contribute. By making a time commitment, you enable the Volunteer Services staff to effectively manage volunteer and staff needs.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What kind of time commitment do I have to make?
We ask for a 100-hour commitment, although there are circumstances where that can be negotiated. Some volunteer positions require a weekly schedule; others are more flexible and driven by project completion.
2. What kind of training do I need?
All volunteers complete an initial orientation, safety education and immunization screening. The position may require additional on-the-job training.
3. What kind of dress code do you have?
Adult volunteers are provided hospital smocks. Junior volunteers, "Volunteens," can purchase apparel with the Providence logo. In addition, all volunteers must comply with the hospital dress code policy outlined in their orientation handbook.
4. What if I can't do the job or don't like it?
We ask you to remain in the position for at least 6 weeks. If you then decide to change positions, the Volunteer Service office will discuss other possible openings.
