Pediatric Department

Providence Tarzana Medical Center Pediatric Department

We understand that having a hospitalized child is a very frightening and stressful experience. Placing your child in the care of the pediatric unit is the beginning of a relationship that must be based on trust and confidence in high quality care. At Providence Tarzana Medical Center, we are committed to meeting the needs of both your child and
your family.
Alicia Briggs, MD, Chief of Pediatrics

Taking a family-centered approach, our pediatric teams work very hard to make your child’s stay as comfortable as possible for everyone. We believe in working as a team to keep you informed and involved in your child’s care. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and take an active role in daily activities, such as cuddling, feedings, bathing, diaper changes, and playtime. These routine things help to make a foreign environment a little less scary for a child. We look to parents as partners in practice, and we respect the fact that you are your child’s strongest advocate.

Team Work
Many parents take comfort in knowing that our Pediatric Team consists of compassionate, skilled professionals who specialize in the care of children. Our special training focuses not only on pediatric health care and treatments but also emphasizes age appropriate developmentaland psychosocial needs. Our pediatric team is made up of physicians, nurses, nurses’ aids, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, social workers, case managers, and dieticians. Each staff member plays a role in helping your child to return to his or her optimal state of health.

Finding a staff member who is willing to “go the extra mile” for a patient or a parent is not uncommon in pediatrics — actually it is the norm. We believe in ensuring that our families are completely satisfied with their care, and we are always looking to do “just a little more.”

  • On the Pediatric Unit, your regular pediatrician may chose to work with a hospitalist, a pediatrician who specializes in caring for hospitalized children. Your regular pediatrician and the hospitalist work closely to provide medical treatment while your child is hospitalized on the pediatric ward.

  • In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a specially trained physician manages the care of critically ill children. This physician, called an intensivist, also stays in close contact with your regular pediatrician to manage the medical treatment of our patients.

Multi-disciplinary Rounds
To ensure that every aspect of your child’s care is being addressed, our units conduct multidisciplinary patient care rounds every week. Pediatric team members gather to discuss every pediatric patient to devise a plan of care specially tailored to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

Visitation
Parents may visit at all hours. In fact, we highly encourage one parent per child to spend the night for the child’s comfort. We provide a sleeper chair at the child’s bedside and meal tickets for a parent to enjoy meals at our cafeteria. For your convenience, we also offer free parking to parents; our staff will provide a parking pass for the duration of your child’s stay.

During the summer months, children under 12 may be permitted a short visit after being cleared by the nursing staff. During the winter season when colds and flu are very common, stricter visitation policies are enforced on our units to ensure the protection of your child.

Accommodations

  • The Pediatric Unit offers semi-private rooms where patients share a room with a patient of a similar age and diagnosis. We also have two negative-airflow single patient rooms available for patients who require isolation precautions.

  • In our PICU, we offer four open unit bed spaces. This unit also has three isolation rooms that are assigned according to diagnosis.
