Rolling in the grass. Running through the sprinkler. Jumping on a pile of leaves. Playing catch. All yield the unbridled laughter and carefree energy of a child playing. From a child’s perspective play is a fun, enjoyable activity. Underneath, however, play offers so much more. Through play, children receive stimulation on numerous levels – social, physical, emotional and cognitive. Play is a key factor for learning and development in children of all ages and abilities.
Providence Child Center cares for all kinds of children, from the rambunctious to the medically fragile. For each child, play is an essential part of the day. The level and purpose of the play activities are tailored to the specific needs of each child, helping each one achieve development goals. Consider a child moved from a wheelchair to lie on the grass in the sunshine; what she sees or hears or smells gives her a feeling of freedom. Children with special needs benefit from a romp in the ball pit, where they gain an awareness of spatial relationship. Toddlers challenge their dexterity and coordination climbing play structures and pedaling tricycles.
Providence Child Center is filled with the energy of laughter and the brightness of smiles from children doing what they know best – playing.
