Wine & Health

Newberg is fortunate to have Richard Crone, M.D., a cardiologist with Columbia Cardiology, on our campus. Dr. Crone, an avid wine collector and connoisseur, embraces a passion for fine quality red wine, and possesses a medical interest as well.

“Studies have indicated that red wine (and maybe even white wine) can raise HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and may decrease the effect of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). A rich source of antioxidants, red wine may also help to reduce the inflammatory effect that causes blood vessel damage from plaque,” says Crone. “Other studies have shown that people from the Mediterranean region who regularly consumed red wine displayed a lower risk of heart disease."

Dr. Crone recommends people who drink wine do so in moderation, engage in regular physical exercise, and eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables to maximize heart health.
