Living our Mission beyond borders with Esperanza International
We use a community-focused approach to achieve the greatest impact where it is needed most in Latin America. In Mexico, our partnership around safe and dignified housing with Esperanza International ensures families have a safe place to grow their dreams. Regardless of national boundaries, compassionate service to all has been a part of our Mission since the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange began their work. Carrying this Mission as we always have, we continue to touch lives wherever relief, comfort and care are needed most.
Partnering for safe and dignified housing in Mexico
Providence St. Joseph Health believes that a combination of cost-effective affordable housing and support services will help people live more productive lives. Typically, once a person finds safe, affordable housing they become more socially involved in their community, and families are better able to meet their health, education, and employment needs. Esperanza and PSJH share a common understanding of the value of safe and dignified housing and the importance of getting upstream in responding to the needs of vulnerable communities.
Engaging PSJH volunteers
Esperanza service trips focus on working in solidarity with Tijuana residents by participating in a community project or home construction while learning about the US-Mexico border, immigration, and human rights.
Focusing to make an impact
As a system, PSJH is deepening our partnerships with Esperanza by focusing in a specific community called Lomas del Valle. Close to ten years ago the Mexican government donated land to Esperanza, and Esperanza created a vision of an integrated community with over 60 individual family homes, a community center, and a health clinic. Unfortunately due to lack of funding, the program was halted after only 6 homes were built. With the support of Global Partnerships, the vision for Lomas del Valle has been reborn. Current teams fundraise for land improvements, support community based projects in Lomas del Valle, and do construction in existing Esperanza communities. New home construction will begin in Lomas del Valle in 2020.
