“The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin

Book review by Andria Moore MN, RN, CPHQ, CCRN-K, Program Manager, Nursing Practice & Quality

The opening keynote speaker at the 2019 ANCC National Magnet Conference in Orlando, FL was author Gretchen Rubin. Ms. Rubin’s talk focused around her book entitled The Four Tendencies- The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Life Better, Too).

According to Ms. Rubin, we all fall into four personality types or tendencies:

  1. Upholders
  2. Questioners
  3. Obligers
  4. Rebels

Which group you fall into can provide some insight into how you respond to both inner expectations, those we place on ourselves, and outer expectations, those imposed on us by others. Understanding the framework of these tendencies and learning about your own tendency can help one make better decisions, meet deadlines, reduce stress and burnout, and engage with others more effectively. Harnessing the strengths of your tendency and counteracting the weaknesses can help one become happier, healthier, and more productive, regardless of your tendency type.

If you are interested in learning more about the four tendencies and want to find out which tendency type most aligns with your personality, a short, free quiz is available at https://quiz.gretchenrubin.com/.
