In her practice, Elenie Smith believes her most important role as a certified nurse midwife is to be present for the women in her care. "It's important for me to be a guide while allowing women to make their own choices in their health care," she says. At age 15, Elenie was inspired to become a midwife after witnessing a woman give birth in a hospital lobby. "The process of watching a woman become a mother and create a new family is rewarding," she says. After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Southern Illinois University, she completed her Master of Science degree in nursing at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her certificate in midwifery from Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Kentucky. Elenie has worked overseas in Kosovo during the country's post-war period and in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. In her free time, she enjoys doll making, hand stitching, movies and reading.
