Professional Statement
Dr. Benz was inspired to pursue a career in medicine when he lived with an esteemed pediatrician in Guadalajara, Mexico, as a high school student. In medical school, everything fascinated him, and it wasn't until he tore his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) his senior year that his future in orthopedic surgery came into focus. "I have an aptitude for athletics and tasks involving hand-eye coordination. When I tore my ACL in 1979, arthroscopic surgery was in its infancy," he says. "But it was clear to me that orthopedics combined the mental and physical skills I am best suited for." Dr. Benz has done thousands of knee, hip and shoulder replacements over the last three decades at four institutions, including Providence Seaside Hospital. He was the Jesuit High School football team sideline physician for 25 years. His emphasis is on patient involvement and education. "I have a lot of confidence in my ability to make the appropriate diagnosis and deliver the right treatment," he says. "But equally important is putting the patient at ease and explaining in everyday terms what it all means. I spend time with every patient to make sure they have an appreciation for what the outcome will be when all is said and done. I make sure they know exactly what to expect." Dr. Benz earned his medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University and completed his internship and residency at Maricopa County Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship at OHSU in which he was an instructor specializing in trauma and joint replacements. He has special training in bone and joint problems and sports injuries. He has been an Oregonian since two weeks of age. He and his wife have been visiting the North Oregon Coast for 50-plus years. They have enjoyed a residence in Seaside for the last decade. They both love to golf. Their four children and six grandchildren cherish the coast. Dr. Benz enjoys languages and is fluent in Spanish. He studies German, Italian and French. He enjoys regular travel to Mexico.
