David J. Mikkelsen, MD

Dr. David Mikkelsen is a native of the Inland Northwest. After being raised in Western Montana and attending Montana State University he graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Mikkelsen then completed a surgical internship and urologic surgical residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After completion of residency he joined Spokane Urology where he has practiced since l990. Dr. Mikkelsen holds privileges at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Deaconess Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital and Valley Hospital. He has been an American Board of Urology diplomat since 1993 with recertification in 2002, 2010 and Maintenance of Certification to present with membership in multiple professional organizations and societies. In addition to patient care responsibilities, Dr. Mikkelsen has instructed residents with the Family Medicine Spokane Residency Program affiliated with the University of Washington Department of Family Medicine. Teaching activities have included both didactic lectures and in-office instruction. Besides offering a full spectrum of general urologic care including stone disease and incontinence surgery, Dr. Mikkelsen has also developed special interest in surgery for urologic cancers. He is proud to have played a strong role in developing an early and successful program for robotic assisted urologic surgery using the da Vinci Robotic system at Sacred Heart Medical Center and continues to offer an extensive experience with both open and laparoscopic approaches for a wide range of urologic malignancies particularly prostate cancer. Aside from medical practice, Dr. Mikkelsen enjoys a variety of outdoor pursuits, which are easily availed in the Spokane area, and most importantly he enjoys time spent with the three women in his life, his wife and two daughters.
