About Mark J. Kelly

Growing up, Mark Kelly, M.D. was impressed by the work of Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the Nobel Prize winning philosopher, theologian and physician, who spent his life helping and healing the most in need. His actions and words influenced Dr. Kelly’s decision to practice medicine. To this day, Schweitzer’s quote, “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others,” is etched in Kelly’s soul. Dr. Kelly is the Chief of Urology at Providence-Saint John’s Health Center and serves on the Surgery Committee, the Cancer Committee and the Infectious Disease Prevention Committee. Specializing in urology with a particular interest in urologic cancers, Dr. Kelly studied cancer epidemiology to fully understand who gets what diseases, why and what interventions can be done to intervene or prevent the disease from occurring at all. Today, he continues his learning, aligning with researchers at Saint John’s Cancer Institute, and adopting new treatment options for prostate cancer that can spare men from some undesirable consequences that can occur from traditional treatments of the disease. Dr. Kelly enjoys partnering with his patients, looking at the whole person, their lifestyle and health practices and helping them understand that change for the better is possible. He discovered yoga almost 15 years ago and has a dedicated practice that has opened his mind to alternative views of spirituality, of perspective and healing. An Italian descendant, Dr. Kelly takes Italian lessons in his spare time and visits the country to connect him to his family’s past and learn the history of his ancestor’s country. He has a daughter who is an artist and a son who serves our country in the military.
