About Julia C. Swanson
Dr. Julia Swanson found a passion for science at a young age with a particular interest in how the human body functions. Combining that passion with a desire to care for others the field of medicine felt like the perfect combination. She continues this same care and desire for understanding in her approach with patients. With the “ultimate goal being the best possible operation for the patient,” Dr. Swanson shares that it is important her “patients to understand the reason that brought them to me so that they can make informed decisions about their care.”
While pursuing her necessary academic studies, Dr Swanson involved herself in the healthcare scene quickly by volunteering in the emergency department near her college campus. There she assisted in caring for patients and their families. From there, she attended Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) for medical school where she spent time with pediatric cardiac surgery. It was this experience that helped guide Dr. Swanson toward a practice in the field of heart surgery. During her general surgery residency at OHSU, she paused for three years to immerse herself into the study of the mitral valve and heart functions at Stanford University School of Medicine. After completing general surgery residency she then went on to complete a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia. She finished her formal medical training with a super-fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital in Congenital Heart Surgery.

Outside of her medical practice, Dr. Swanson enjoys spending time with family, being outdoors and staying active. Both she and her husband are endurance athletes! She has completed two full Ironman races in additional to many triathlons, ultramarathons and a 50-mile race.

My appointment with Dr Swanson was mostly an educational one in that she gave me more information about my mitral valve problem and further support I might need beyond installing a Mitralclip. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the heart and the forms of support available. Dr Swanson came across as a very caring and concerned medical professional.

Dr. Julia Swanson replaced both my aortic and mitral valves in 2019. She provided amazing care both before and after surgery.
