About Richard A. Salerno

“Critically ill children and their families deserve the best medical care as well as care that respects their dignity and individuality,” says Richard Salerno, M.D. “Providing such care of the child and their family is the most deeply satisfying aspect of pediatric critical care as well as the care that patients can expect from me.”

Dr. Salerno was inspired to go into medicine by his father who was the first one in his family to complete high school and college. Dr. Salerno says, “His dedication to medicine and his patients made a deep impression on me.”

Like his father, Dr. Salerno entered his career as a primary care physician. In this role, he became ever more interested in treating critically ill patients, particularly children. After several years as a primary care physician, Dr. Salerno entered a fellowship in pediatric critical care and says, “It was the best decision I’ve made.”

Dr. Salerno had a variety of jobs following college, including neuroscience research, The Red Cross, an emergency medical technician and a bus driver. He says, “They’ve all taught me about the dignity of work and the satisfaction of a job well done.”

Dr. Salerno has also “been honored to have had the opportunity to provide medical service in developing countries, including Honduras, Haiti and Lebanon.”

He was born in Wurzburg, Germany, while his father was serving in the U.S. Army. He tries to keep up with the German he learned as a child and in school. Dr. Salerno was raised in and around New York City.

He has three children and enjoys spending time with his wife traveling, hiking, biking, running, cooking and going to the gym. Dr. Salerno is always looking for new opportunities to develop as a physician and a human being.
