About Benjamin C. Bengs

Dr. Bengs has been with Providence St. John’s Health since 2018 and is currently the Director of Special Surgery at the Center for Hip and Knee Replacement. Previously, Dr. Bengs was the Chief of Joint Replacement Surgery and Department Vice Chair at UCLA where he was an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Bengs medical training started at Georgetown University School of Medicine where he graduated Cum Laude with Alpha Omega Alpha distinction. He completed Orthopaedic Surgery Residence at Harvard and was awarded the Leonard Marmour Award for excellence. Dr. Bengs then completed an additional year of joint replacement fellowship training at UCLA.

Dr. Bengs has numerous peer reviewed scientific publications and has received over $100,000 in awards for research.

Dr. Bengs is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Benjamin Bengs, MD was inspired by his grandfather to follow in his footsteps with a medical career. Excellence in medicine and great patient care were instilled at a very young age. Subsequently, Dr. Bengs chose the same university as his grandfather and graduated with honors from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is currently the Director of Special Surgeries and Center for Hip and Knee Replacement at Providence Saint John’s Health Center. In this position he continues his passion for joint disease care and is serving in the hospital administration to improve all orthopedic care.

Prior to his current position Dr. Bengs was an Associate Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a full-time faculty surgeon. He held many additional positions at UCLA including being the Chief of Joint Replacement and Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His practice specializes in joint replacement, joint revision, and periprosthetic fracture care.

Dr. Bengs’ approach to his patients is modeled after his grandfather’s approach as a family doctor. He believes in taking a little extra time to understand fully each individual’s needs. He finds that his patients appreciate this. Throughout his career and his passion to help fix the joint problems that people face, there has been excellent patient feedback:

Many honors, awards and publications have accompanied Dr. Bengs education and career. His undergraduate degree came in physiology with high honors and distinctions from the University of California at Santa Barbara. From Georgetown University School of Medicine, he graduated in 2001 with cum laude honors and as part of the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. While at Harvard for his residency in orthopedic surgery he received the Leonard Marmor Award that is given annually to the graduating senior with the highest Orthopaedic In-Training Examination scores.

Dr. Bengs completed additional fellowship training in joint replacement at UCLA. He is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Bengs’ research interests include femoral bone loss modeling for revision surgery, hip and knee range of motion, and fragility fractures. His awards and honors include an Orthopedic Research Education Foundation Grant, Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital Doctor’s Grant, and has received over $100,000 in research grants.

Away from the office and hospital, Dr. Bengs finds sailing with his wife to Catalina Island a favorite pastime. Managing and working on their ranch is another rewarding experience but there is always room to work in sailing, tennis and golf.
