About Joey R. Gee

Dr. Gee was born and raised in Sacramento, California. He attended his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Irvine, where he received his Bachelors in Science of Biological Sciences in 1994. During his time at the University, he participated in scientific research within the neurosciences. He was honored with his first publication during this time with his professor. This activity spurred his interest of the neurological sciences. He attended medical school at Des Moines University School of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated as the 100th class in 1998.

Following medical school, he performed his internship in medicine in upstate New York. He completed his neurology residency at the University of California at Davis, with his final year as Chief Resident. He decided during this time to focus on headache medicine and completed the first fellowship in headache medicine at the University after receiving an award grant from the American Headache Society to sponsor his research on migraine and multiple sclerosis. This project was presented to the American Headache Society at their annual national conference and published it in the medical journal HEADACHE. He also attended a nationally sponsored mini-stroke fellowship during his fellowship at the University, where he partook in increasing his understanding of stroke and upcoming advances in stroke care. He was appointed assistant staff physician for the University and participated within the Headache Clinic. In his final year at UC Davis, he attended a national stroke mini-fellowship. After completion of his residency, he and his family moved to southern California as he took a position with Kaiser Permanente and directed the regional headache clinic alongside his general neurology clinic. He became a regional Headache Champion for the group. He undertook and updated the stroke program during his tenure . He left the Kaiser organization to take part in creating and establishing the neurology department for Mission Internal Medical Group in 2007. He continues to stay active in headache medicine as he maintains membership in the major headache medicine organizations and is part of the headache section within the American Academy of Neurology. He is one of the original members of the Headache Cooperative of the Pacific, an organization established for promoting education and communication in headache care. He is active within Mission Hospital at both campuses of Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo. He is active in the stroke program at Mission Hospital, where it maintains its national certification in stroke care. He is involved in creating a stroke aftercare clinic to promote good health after such an event. He is involved in the hospital’s seizure and epilepsy protocols. He is also attends to Children’s Hospital of Orange County at the Mission Viejo site. He has been acknowledged by the Orange County Medical Association as a "Top Doctor" since 2013.
