About Kai-Uwe U. Mazur

Dr. Kai-Uwe Mazur has been elected to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Mazur attended Brown University where he received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Geology, Magna Cum Laude. He received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine during which he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He was awarded the Solomon and Dora Shapiro Award for Excellence in Character. While in Medical School, Dr. Mazur raced in the New York City Marathon.

Dr. Mazur completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Southern California (USC) where his interest in hand and microsurgery began. He published several peer-reviewed research papers and presented his findings at national meetings. His experience at USC/Los Angeles County Hospital includes providing care during the L.A. riots and the aftermath of the Northridge Quake, and serving as Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma managing a team of orthopaedic surgeons caring for victims of inner-city violence.

Dr. Mazur pursued further training in Hand and Upper-Extremity Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He became certified in microvascular surgery and performed upper-limb reimplantation and reattachment surgeries.

Dr. Mazur has been in private practice since 1996 and is considered one of Northern California’s leading experts in hand and upper-extremity surgeries. Dr. Mazur’s practice not only specializes in the treatment of common hand and upper-extremity disorders, but also complex acute trauma reconstruction, posttraumatic reconstruction, treatment of sports and degenerative disorders of the upper extremity, and complex wrist and elbow reconstruction. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Mazur serves as the Senior Trauma Consultant at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital (Level 2 Trauma Center) treating severe hand, wrist and elbow injuries, as well as traumatic injuries to peripheral nerves.

Dr. Mazur is the co-director of The Hand Center at SRO and performs the latest techniques in upper-extremity joint arthroplasty/replacement, advanced arthroscopic reconstruction, ligament reconstruction of the upper extremity, tendon repair, vascularized bone grafting, peripheral nerve surgery and microsurgery. Dr. Mazur also provides leading-edge treatment for cumulative trauma disorders and performs minimally invasive surgeries for carpal tunnel syndrome and other overuse disorders. In addition he performs total elbow, thumb basilar joint, finger and wrist replacements and provides PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma injections) to patients.

Dr. Mazur believes in giving each patient state-of-the-art medical care in a friendly and compassionate environment. His expertise in treatment not only focuses on diagnostics and meticulous surgical details, but also on post surgery rehabilitation where he oversees his patients’ recovery during weekly meetings with his team of highly skilled Hand and Upper Extremity Therapists. His dedicated personal approach to patient care and his insistence to go the extra mile enable him to work closely with each patient to achieve the highest level of function and recovery.

Dr. Mazur’s passion for improving patient care has led him to develop new techniques for the treatment of injuries to the wrist, hand and upper extremities. He currently holds several provisional U.S. medical device and surgical technique patents. He is co-founder and Chief Medical Director of Sonoma Orthopaedic Products, a Sonoma County-based orthopaedic surgical device company.

Dr. Mazur has traveled extensively to developing countries where he has provided surgical care for the indigenous population. He also provides surgical care for the underserved communities in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County.
Dr. Mazur serves on the Brown University Admissions Interview Board reviewing prospective candidates for admission.

Dr. Mazur is married with three children. An avid soccer fan and history buff, he is bilingual in English and German and enjoys family time, running, snowboarding and travel.
