About Stewart L. Shanfield

Stewart L. Shanfield, MD is a board certified orthopedic surgeon practice with St. Jude Heritage Medical Group. A graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center he completed his orthopedic residency at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles. He completed a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery Cornell Medical Center in New York City. He has served in several elected and appointed positions at St. Jude Medical Center including Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery and Chairman of Board of Trustees. He was an assistant clinical professor at UCI Medical Center and currently serves as adjunct faculty for physician assistant programs at USC and Marshall Ketchum University. The Orange County Medical Association has selected him as an orthopedic surgeon of excellence from 2004-2018. The Arthritis Foundation honored him in 2015.

Dr Shanfield’s specialist interest lies with biomechanics and surgery of the foot and ankle, and surgical management of the hip and knee for sports and arthritic disease. He is a formidable expert in the perioperative management of the total joint replacement patients, in particular for multi-modal pain management, and medical optimization prior to surgery. His goal is to return his patients to their active work and family life as quickly as possible.

Patient wellbeing is paramount for Dr. Shanfield. He is an instructor and physician champion for CREW Resource Management which utilizes aviation techniques that promotes surgical team integration and collaboration for patient safety.

Affiliations include American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Association. He is currently a Trustee with the Cooperative of American Physicians a physician directed co-op for professional liability insurance. .
