Dr. Stephen Wigginton joined Coastal Vision in 2018. As a fellowship-trained ophthalmic surgeon, he specializes in both cataract and glaucoma surgeries, including recently developed minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS). He is board certified in ophthalmology and has been elected to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, and the American Board of Ophthalmology. he has published book chapters and scientific articles in ophthalmology and pharmacology.
He hails from Frederick, Maryland, though his family back back five generations in Texas- well before it was even a state. Dr. Wigginton began his academic career focused on biomedical research. A bachelor's degree in biochemistry was followed by a master's degree in pharmacology. He began working on his doctorate in neuroscience before switching paths to attend medical school. "I loved research but always wanted to become a medical doctor. In the end, medicine won! I had the best time in medical school, and the training after was an amazing experience. It was truly an honor being a resident in ophthalmology at the acclaimed Jules Stein Eye Institute."
Dr. Wigginton has successfully performed thousands of cataract and glaucoma surgical cases prior to joining Coastal Vision. "I was initially drawn to Texas to be near family after I finished my fellowship, After seventeen years, I decided to move back to California. As an avid biker, I really enjoyed being outdoors in sunny California. He also enjoys cooking, language studies, and swimming.
