About Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a type of thoracic cancer that begins in the lungs. It is often caused by exposure to tobacco, though there are rising numbers of patients being diagnosed with lung cancer who have never smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke.

Our expert oncology team uses the most effective, leading-edge therapies to treat patients with lung cancer and its related conditions, including:

  • Non-small cell lung cancer
  • Small cell lung cancer

Lung Cancer Screening

Early detection of cancer increases the likelihood of positive long-term outcomes. We strive to empower you to take control of your respiratory health. Undergoing a lung cancer screening can help detect early-stage lung cancer, even if symptoms aren’t apparent. Learn more about lung cancer screening today.

Testing and Diagnostics

Your doctors use many diagnostic and prognostic tools to learn which therapies work best to treat your cancer. Taking into account factors specific to your case, like cancer type and the genetic or molecular profile of the tumor, this may include one or more of the following:

  • Gene expression assay
  • Genomic tumor profiling
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • PET/CT scan

In addition, we offer low-dose CT scan monitoring to help detect lung cancer in its earliest stages. This screening program is used to monitor patients who are at risk of lung cancer, including current and former smokers. We also offer a smoking cessation program.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, but access to great cancer care hasn’t always been the same for everyone. At Covenant Health, we are deeply committed to making sure every patient we treat has access to the best cancer care. We offer a shuttle service and partner with the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge to provide patients in need with free lodging.

We value, respect and support the racial, ethnic, religious, spiritual, gender and sexual identities of each member of our diverse communities. In keeping with our Mission, Providence offers financial assistance programs that provide free and low-cost care to those who are eligible.

Covenant Health features world-class oncologists backed by a deep team of specialists. Covenant is part of the Providence family, and as our patient, you have access to the largest community-based cancer network in the United States. This means that your local cancer care team shares knowledge and experience with other world-class clinicians across Providence’s 51 hospitals in seven states. The power of our network is one of the reasons hundreds of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients choose us for their cancer care each year.

Covenant Health is known for offering options – and hope – to patients seeking advanced therapies to treat their lung cancer. As our patient, you can participate in one of our many clinical trials. This includes FDA-regulated trials to develop new cancer therapies.

As a member of the Providence family, we partner with the Providence Research Network and the Providence Molecular Genomics Laboratory to continually improve our care for the best outcomes.
