  • What is hospice?
    Hospice provides comfort and support to patients and families facing a life-limiting illness. The goal of hospice care is quality of life and meeting the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of patients. We focus on comfort.
  • Who can receive hospice care?
    Hospice care is provided to anyone who has a medical condition with a prognosis of six months or less if the disease or condition runs its normal course. Hospice is for patients who have chosen to focus on comfort care.
  • Where does hospice care take place?
    Hospice care usually takes place in the comfort of your home but can be provided in any setting including skilled nursing homes, residential care facilities and the hospital.
  • Who pays for hospice care?
    Medicare, Medi Cal and most commercial insurance plans pay for hospice services.
  • When should a decision be made to enter hospice and who makes it?
    At any time during a life-threatening illness when a cure is no longer possible or the patient makes a decision to discontinue curative care and focus on comfort. The decision to enter hospice care is made with the patient, family and their physician preferably as soon as it is clear that the focus is no longer on curing the illness. This allows for sufficient time for the hospice team to establish a relationship and manage the patient's symptoms.
  • What services does hospice care cover?
    Home visits by the interdisciplinary team consisting of the nurse, social worker, chaplain, certified home health aide and volunteer. A dietitian, physical therapist and occupational therapist can also be consulted. Medications related to the terminal illness are covered as well as medical supplies and medical equipment. St. Joseph Hospice through our Foundation provides Music and Massage on a limited basis. Not all hospices provide these services as they are not mandated by Medicare. Grief support services are provided to families for 13 months following the death.
  • What about my primary care physician?
    Hospice works closely with the patient's primary care physician to create a plan of care that meets the patient’s unique needs. Patients can continue to see their primary care physician in the office setting as needed.
  • What if I change my mind about hospice care?
    Patients can change their mind at any time and revoke the hospice benefit. Patients may return to the hospital and pursue treatment if they desire.
  • Is St. Joseph Health Hospice a Catholic Hospice?
    At St. Joseph Health, Hospice, we serve all religions and denominational preferences. Our chaplains are educated in all faiths and religious practices. In addition, we are able to meet the specific needs of the Catholic community.
  • How does a person get admitted to hospice?
    Call 714-712-9559 and our Admissions department will arrange for a physician order. Our staff will make an appointment to visit the patient, complete an assessment, sign consents and develop a plan of care.

Did you know that there are several myths about hospice care in the community? Even health care professionals have some misconceptions about what hospice care is and who would benefit from this specialized end-of-life care.

  • Myth #1: Hospice is a place
    Fact: Hospice care usually takes place in the comfort of your home, but can be provided in many settings including skilled nursing homes, residential care facilities and the hospital.
  • Myth #2: Hospice is for the day of death
    Fact: Hospice was designed to meet the unique needs of terminally ill patients and their families during the last 6 months of life.
  • Myth #3: Hospice is only for cancer patients
    Fact: Hospice cares for many patients with different diagnoses.
  • Myth #4: Patients can only receive hospice care for a limited amount of time
    Fact: The Medicare/Medi Cal benefit and most commercial health plans cover hospice care as long as the patient continues to meet the necessary criteria. Some hospice patients stabilize and are discharged from service. These patients are allowed to come back onto service when they are more appropriate for hospice care.
  • Myth #5: Hospice patients must have a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) status
    Fact: Hospice patients do not have to have a DNR in place to be admitted to hospice care.
  • Myth #6: Patients have to give up their own physician when they are admitted to hospice
    Fact: Patients may keep their own physician; they can see that physician in their office and Medicare will reimburse the physician for those office visits.
  • Myth #7: Hospice patients can’t have feeding tubes or IV hydration
    Fact: Each patient is evaluated on a case by case basis and receives the treatments necessary to provide support and comfort.
  • Myth #8: Hospice provides nursing care in the home 24 hours a day
    Fact: The Hospice Team makes intermittent visits to the patient in their home, Skilled Nursing Facility or Extended Care Facility. A Hospice Nurse is available by phone and visits when needed 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
  • Myth #9: Hospice care is expensive
    Fact: Medicare and Medi Cal pay for hospice services at 100% coverage. Many commercial health plans now offer a hospice benefit with little out of pocket expenses to the patient or family. The financial burdens usually associated with caring for a terminally ill patient are minimal.
  • Myth #10: Hospice means giving up hope
    Fact: Hope never goes away. When the hope for a cure is no longer possible the hope for quality of life and spending time with family and friends becomes the focus.
Billing and insurance

Services provided by our network will be billed to your insurance. We will obtain necessary authorizations from your insurance and physicians to determine home health care coverage eligibility. We will provide you with a financial responsibility letter outlining your insurance benefits and cost specific to the services rendered by our agency. This will help you make an informed decision about your care.

For patients with Medicare, Medi-Cal and or Private Insurance, we will bill your insurance directly. Patient responsibility, identified by your insurance carrier, will be billed to you on a monthly basis. For patients that do not have insurance coverage, we will bill you or your guarantor directly for the services rendered. As the patient, you are ultimately responsible for payment for the services rendered.

Interpreter services

We have multilingual clinicians to meet a variety of languages represented in the community we serve. In addition, we provide telephone interpreter services through Pacific Interpreters.

Quality and safety

Patient safety and quality care are of paramount concern at Providence Home and Community Care. We have implemented a number of strategies to achieve continuous improvement in this area. Our patient safety officer combats safety challenges by developing safer procedures and educating our staff about these improved methods. In addition, we encourage our patients to participate in our efforts to increase safe practices in their home.

Referrals to hospice come from physicians, hospitals, family members, skilled nursing facilities and residential care facilities. A patient is appropriate for hospice when aggressive treatment has ended and the patient chooses comfort care. The focus of care becomes one of quality of life, including pain and symptom management.

The patient is referred by the physician who oversees his or her care and who is in agreement with the hospice philosophy and life-limiting prognosis. Hospice team members continue to work closely with the physician throughout the course of treatment.
