Pharmacy Residency Program
Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is a non-profit community hospital with 250 licensed beds located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is compliant with accreditation standards set by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Our program is a one-year postgraduate residency with an emphasis in pharmaceutical care in an acute care hospital with wide variety of services including general medicine, antimicrobial stewardship, critical care, emergency medicine, pediatrics/neonatology, cardiology, cath-lab, and oncology.
This program is designed to provide supportive learning environment for an independent practitioner who is highly motivated. The program will emphasize development of clinical, teaching, operational, administrative and leadership abilities.
The pharmacy department offers 24-hour services and we are currently looking to expand the clinical pharmacy services. Some of the clinical services provided by the pharmacy department include Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) consult, Pharmacokinetic consult, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Renal Dose Adjustment, IV to PO conversion, and Anticoagulation.
The resident will gain the following skills at the completion of residency:
- Direct patient care applying evidence-based patient-centered medication therapy and management in acute care setting
- Medication-use process managing and improvement
- Leadership and practice management along with project management skills
- Providing medication and practice-related education/training
- Formulary decision-making
- Conducting pharmacy practice research
- Ready to be a faculty member at a school of pharmacy
Rotations including participation in patient care, attending rounds, monitoring and regulating patient drug therapy, pharmacokinetics, TPN consults and providing drug information. The resident is also involves in in-service lectures and precepting 4th year pharmacy students from local affiliated schools of pharmacy. Rotations include but are not limited to the following practice areas listed below:
Core

- Antimicrobial Stewardship (6 weeks)
- Pediatrics/Neonatal (6 weeks)
- Nutritional Support (6 weeks)
- Oncology (3 weeks)
- Emergency Medicine (3 weeks)
Electives
- Palliative care/pain management, investigational drugs, etc.
Longitudinal/Practice management
The resident will be familiar with the many aspects and functions of the hospital pharmacy administration and will gain experience in administrative decision making and problem solving including medication error, ADR, performance improvement and management.

Resident research project
The resident is required to undertake a year-long project in addition to various short-term projects assigned throughout the year. The project will be presented as a poste at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December and presented at the Western State conference in May.
The appointment period is 12 months from July 1 through June 30. The resident’s schedule includes staffing two weekends a month. There is an opportunity to staff once adequately trained. The residents will also participate in activities necessary for accreditation.
Compensation for the first year of residency is approximately $51,000. Benefits include full medical, dental and vision coverage as well as 14 days of paid vacation. Residency accommodations include their own work area, hospital cell phone/PDA, travel and registration reimbursements for residency related conferences.

Requirements for acceptance
The candidate must have the following:
- Possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
- Be eligible to apply for licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of California

Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is an ASHP accredited program and requires the resident applicant to participating in ASHP MATCHING program. Personal interviews will be scheduled for the month of February through March. Selected applicants will be notified of their interview times.
