Q. What is the ‘Providence Tarzana Reimagined’ Project?
A. The Providence Tarzana Reimagined Project is a $540 million investment, including $150 million in funding support from our community to ‘reimagine’ the medical center campus, primarily through construction of a 6-story patient wing, expanded Emergency Room for improved access to care, a lobby enhancement and an additional parking structure to help us prepare for the future of healthcare in our community. The project also includes technology updates, a sustainable and energy efficient design in the new buildings and additional healing green space at the Medical Center.
Q. Why is Providence Tarzana making such a major investment in its facilities?
A. Providence Tarzana’s Mission is to serve the poor and vulnerable. We’re investing in our medical center to improve access to care and to meet the growing health care needs of the communities in the San Fernando Valley and neighboring areas. The timing is right to create a ‘future vision’; add new, more efficient and advanced technology; incorporate more environmentally-friendly systems and healing green space; and meet state seismic requirements.
Q. What are the key steps in the City approval process and are there opportunities for public input?
A. There are several steps in the approval process and there will be opportunities for public input. The public will be notified when input meetings are scheduled.
Q. Will the hospital remain open during construction?
A. Yes. As certain areas undergo construction, services will be moved to alternate locations within the hospital or other buildings on campus. Providence Tarzana has planned carefully to ensure patient care continues uninterrupted.
Q. Is Providence Tarzana also doing renovations to meet the state seismic upgrade deadlines?
A. Yes, for some time, Providence Tarzana has been working with the state agencies to approve renovations to existing facilities in response to the state-mandated seismic upgrade deadline. Such improvements will begin as early as 2017.
Q. Will this improved campus create more traffic issues?
A. The new design includes ways to more efficiently direct access, making it easier to enter and exit as well as to find parking.
Q. Will the new construction jobs be union jobs?
A. Yes. The “Providence Tarzana Medical Center Reimagined” project will include a labor agreement. Our partnership with the Building and Construction Trades Council will help us deliver a much needed project in the community that will provide more than 1,000 construction jobs throughout the life of the project, with good wages and benefits.
Q. Is the community supporting this plan?
A. Providence Tarzana has extensive ties to the local community and the community has been very generous in supporting the hospital throughout our history. Those we serve have been invested in our hospital and we will continue to seek their input and support as we work through our plans.
Q. How else can the community support this project?
A. While much of the funding is secured, we are asking the community to support us by helping us raise $150 million dollars needed to support the project. Our foundation will launch a fundraising campaign in the near future, and there will be philanthropic opportunities for collaboration. Donations can be sent now through providencepowerofgiving.org.
Q. What are some of the features planned in this project?
A. Plans call for a new lobby with an enhanced visitor reception area, the addition of a new replacement patient wing, expanded diagnostic and treatment areas and a new parking structure, all of which will help us prepare for the future of health care in our community.
Q. What sort of technological improvements or other innovations are there in the plan?
A. The plan features a state-of-the-art inpatient building equipped with the most advanced technological improvements, including a new and larger Emergency Department, as well as structural and design updates to the existing hospital campus in an effort to provide more efficient delivery of care and treatment in a healing environment.
Q. What types of landscaping or environmental consideration will be included in the plan?
A. Providence Tarzana is dedicated to its core value of stewardship. Our project will be completed with a sustainable and energy efficient design and we’ll be creating a sustainable, water-efficient landscape on the medical center campus. We are also committed to creating a healing environment for patients and staff so we are planning for public art and water features, green spaces, and upgraded lighting and signage for easier way-finding.
