Opioids (Pain Management)
The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has adopted specific rules, authorization requirements and best practices regarding the utilization of opioids in the care of injured workers. L&I requires authorization for utilization beyond the acute (up to six weeks) stage of the injury and has issued guidance on post-surgical pain medication.

Agency Medical Directors' Group
The Washington State Agency Medical Directors' Group (AMDG) had updated the Interagency Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Pain, which includes recommendations for multi-modal non-opiod therapies and opioids when appropriate. By using the best practices in the new guideline, providers can improve the care of injured workers with chronic pain and help save lives.
AMDG has developed a dosing calculator, assessment tools, educational videos and free CME/CE activities for providers. For more information and access to AMDG resources, visit agencymeddirectors.wa.gov.
