Varicose and spider vein treatment

Do you experience pain, fatigue, heaviness, aching, burning, throbbing, itching or swelling in your legs? Feeling self-conscious about your legs’ appearance?

Our team at Providence Vein Center has been treating varicose and spider veins for 20 years. We know no two cases are alike. Our wide range of treatment options allows us to tailor a plan especially for you and helps resolve the symptoms and cosmetic concerns often caused by varicose and spider vein problems.

Complimentary vein screening assessments

Conducted in the comfort of our office, our vein specialists listen to your concerns, assess the condition of your veins and work with you to design a step-by-step treatment program to meet your specific needs.

That’s when our team of vein specialists help develop solutions for your concerns.

We offer state-of-the art methods and equipment to diagnose and treat varicose veins, spider veins and other vein conditions. A number of minimally-invasive treatments are performed right in our office with little or no pain, short recovery times, and positive results.

Vein disorders aren’t always visible on the surface so an ultrasound is often used to determine the cause and severity of your problem. Based on your initial screening, overall health and risk factors, our team of specialists will develop an individualized care plan that leaves you (and your legs) looking and feeling your best.

The Providence Vein Center in Spokane is part of the larger Providence network of providers allowing us to coordinate your vein treatments with any aspects of your healthcare.

Our Spokane vein center offers treatment for varicose and spider veins in the convenience of the clinic. The procedures are done in less than one hour and patients are back on their feet with minimum down time. Patients benefit from a customized treatment plan which may include thermal ablation using laser light or radiofrequency energy, microambulatory phlebectomy or sclerotherapy. These treatments typically cause minimal discomfort and patients can resume normal activities immediately.

The VenaCure treatment, which uses a highly concentrated laser light, damages the vein wall and seals it shut. In time, the body absorbs the unused vein and it’s no longer visible. The procedure is done in the office with a local anesthesia to numb the area. It typically takes about an hour. After the procedure, patients wear support stockings.

Benefits of the procedure include:

  • Takes less than an hour and provides quick relief of symptoms
  • Return to normal activity sooner than with surgery
  • Minimal scarring because the procedure requires a small surgical incision

Radiofrequency (RF) ablation uses pulses of RF energy instead of a laser light. It is similar to endovenous laser ablation where the procedure damages the vein wall and seals it shut. The benefits of radiofrequency ablation are similar:

  • Procedure done in the office
  • Takes less than an hour and provides quick relief of symptoms
  • Return to normal activity sooner than with surgery
  • Minimal scarring because the procedure requires a small surgical incision

One of the first to offer this latest technique, Providence Vein Center offers VenaSeal™ to treat varicose veins. This technique uses a proprietary medical adhesive delivered through the affected vein to seal it closed. Clinical studies conducted in Europe and the United States have demonstrated the procedure to be safe and effective. This approach does not involve thermal energy, eliminating the need for anesthetic and multiple needle sticks and avoiding patient discomfort. As an added benefit, patients do not have to recover by wearing support stockings after treatment.

With this treatment for larger varicose veins, the provider makes small punctures (.125-.25 inch) in the skin over a bulging vein. Then, small pieces of vein are removed through the punctures. The punctures are closed with a butterfly strip. This procedure is done in the office under local anesthesia.

Used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins, sclerotherapy is also performed in the office. The provider injects medication into the vein using a tiny needle. The medication damages the vein, causing it to collapse and shut. In time, the vein becomes less visible and eventually disappears. You may need just one, or several sessions, depending upon the type and number of veins being treated.

With sclerotherapy anesthesia is not needed. The procedure isn’t painful, however the individual injections may cause a slight burning sensation that lasts a few seconds. The treatment itself takes 20-30 minutes. You may experience minimal discomfort, along with bruising and discoloration. You can resume normal activities immediately.

With three convenient locations in Spokane, your first visit to our Providence Vein Center locations will include the following:

  • Brief medical history
  • Opportunity to answer questions and listen to your concerns
  • Examination of your veins - We use state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment to thoroughly evaluate your condition. Our vein specialists are trained to diagnose underlying causes of the problem and provide the best medical care — not just cosmetic — for the surface condition.
  • Recommended treatment plan - Your treatment plan will depend on the size and number of veins to be treated, your medical history, and a careful diagnosis of your condition.

Because we have experience with a range of treatments for vein problems, we will advise the approach that offers the best possible results for you. Our team will work with your insurance provider to verify coverage options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spider veins, a common vein problem, are broken capillaries. They appear on the surface of the skin and appear web-like and are often red, blue or purple in color. They occur when one-way valves in the blood vessels no longer work properly, causing blood to clot instead of flowing back to the heart. While spider veins aren’t harmful, they may cause burning or itching and may cause some people to feel self-conscious.

Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging, twisted, and often darker in color than spider veins. They are near the skin surface and are caused by leaky valves in veins deeper in the leg. These veins may no longer function normally resulting in blood pooling when calf muscles relax. This makes the veins widen, often becoming unsightly and uncomfortable. Varicose veins can be caused by injury, age, genetics, blood clot or other factors.

Symptoms may include pain, fatigue, heaviness, aching, burning, throbbing, itching or swelling in your legs. Untreated, varicose veins typically worsen over time.

Spider veins and varicose veins can affect women and men of any age, but they are most common in women of childbearing age or older.

Treatments typically cause minimal discomfort and after most procedures you can walk immediately and resume your daily activities (except for heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for one week).

All procedures are done in our clinics as an outpatient visit. Providence Vein Center has three convenient locations in north Spokane, South Hill and Spokane Valley.

Many patients notice an immediate relief of symptoms such as reduced pain, minimized leg heaviness and less fatigue. The full benefits of the procedure may take one to two weeks. Individual results may vary.

While we treat varicose and spider veins any time of the year, many patients seek treatment during fall and winter months to minimize sun exposure of the treated area and to be “summer ready.”

During your vein screening, we will also review your insurance. Our vein center offers an initial screening and consultation at no charge. As with any health procedure, we recommend you contact your insurance company directly for coverage and benefits confirmation.
